We’re investing in upgrades and modifications to the sewer network in a rural Redcar and Cleveland village to help protect the local environment. We’ve started work in the Lingdale area, where 1.8 kilometres of new surface water sewer will be constructed, removing the potential for storm water to over-fill the network that carries sewage from local properties. Additionally, a new below ground storage tank will further help to manage combined flows of wastewater and rainwater, while 150m of combined sewer will be constructed to further enhance the network. The £3.86m project will help to protect the Holme Beck, by reducing storm overflow spills. The work is being carried out by our partner, Esh-Stantec, and will see the sewer upgrades take place in areas in and around Stanghow Road, Dale Terrace, and the Balmoral Road Estate. The new storage tank and associated network alterations will be constructed in farmland south of Hill Croft. The project is expected to be completed by the end of August 2025. Esh Group Stantec

Behind the scenes... Our teams, alongside Greenspark, carried out a logistically difficult wet well clean at Low Stanners Sewage Pumping Station in Morpeth last week! While carrying out the work, they removed eight tonnes of rags - which shouldn't have been in the network! An excellent effort by Liam, Ian, Gary and Jason 👏

Great work being delivered to protect the environment on Teesside.
A 9km pipeline is under construction in Teesside which will enhance the sewer network and help protect the environment. From Long Newton down to Goose Beck a new rising main and gravity pipeline have been installed, with work involving directional drilling under highways and watercourses. A guided auger bore will be deployed to pass under a further watercourse later in the programme. The project is being delivered by Esh-Stantec in partnership with NWG (Northumbrian Water Group).

Parking boost for Northumberland village. Our team have helped create 14 new parking bays in Wark on Tyne to help support the community and open up local businesses to passing trade. The bays were installed by the team carrying out our £3.5m project to upgrade Wark Sewage Treatment works to help protect the River North Tyne from pollution. Along with our partners, Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB, we’re working to triple the site’s capacity, making it capable of dealing with future population growth and additional rain from climate change. While working in the area, the team learned of Wark Parish Council’s ambitions of increasing car parking capacity in the village, and the issues it was having finding the funding needed. As a thank you for the support and patience of villagers while the treatment works upgrades are taking place, members of the project team took time out to help the parish council, creating five new bays on Hexham Road. Additionally, stone was donated and laid to create a hardstanding area that offers an additional nine parking spaces close by. Work on the sewage treatment works upgrades is due to complete by the end of the year, helping to reduce sewage spills into the River North Tyne.

Meet Emily. A BSc in Environmental Science led to Emily joining us recently on our two-year Building Futures graduate scheme. And as a result, she’s spending her first six months with us working as part of our Engineering team, helping to deliver some key projects, including working on upcoming sewer upgrades in County Durham. “Everyone is so helpful and welcoming”, she says. “I'm in Engineering as my first placement so I've had the opportunity to be out on site lots. It’s provided valuable insights into the technical side of the company.” The graduate scheme involves four six-month placements across the two years. We’re already recruiting for the next intake, which starts in September 2025, but hurry – the deadline for applications closes on Sunday (November 17th). You can apply now at www.nwg.co.uk/careers Or, if it’s not for you, why not tag someone who might be interested, or share the post with them?
