NFDC Wellbeing 2024 💜 A efficient demolition workforce starts with wellbeing—both mental and physical. Here's how we’ve been championing positive change this year: 🧠 Mental Health: Breaking the Silence Through our partnership with the Health and Safety Executive’s ‘Working Minds’ campaign, we’ve equipped employers and employees with the tools to proactively address workplace stress, anxiety, and depression. 📊 Key Insights from Industry Research 22% of operatives report high levels of psychological distress. While mental health literacy is strong (scoring 58.1 out of 75), there’s more work to be done to tackle distress levels. 💪 Physical Health: This year, we’ve raised awareness and funds to physical health through a prostate cancer campaign, breast cancer fundraiser and melanoma awareness initiatives. 💡 Looking Ahead Our focus remains on fostering a culture where wellbeing is central to every site. NFDC Safety in 2024 🚧 Take a look at our long-standing RIDDOR reporting and site audit scheme and how we’ve contributed to the nation’s demolition safety resources this year. 📉 RIDDOR Reports Down by 31% A significant reduction in RIDDOR reports among our members reflects the collective efforts to improve safety standards and minimise incidents across the industry. We remain steadfast in our goal of eliminating all incidents. ✅ 132 Site Audits Passed This year, we conducted 132 Site Audits, working closely with contractors to uphold the highest safety standards. 🎓 Safety Seminars: Intelligent Demolition Planning Our NFDC Talks Seminars focused on Intelligent Demolition Planning have empowered members with insights and strategies to plan safer, more effective projects. 🤝 Guiding the Industry with HSE Through member contributions, we’ve been instrumental in shaping Health and Safety Executive Demolition and Structural Stability Guidance Notes, helping set the benchmark for safety best practices. 💬 What This Means for Our Industry: Every milestone reflects the shared commitment of our members to make safety a priority. From fewer incidents to better planning and robust guidance, we’re not just meeting standards—we’re setting them. NFDC Skills & Training in 2024 💳 At NFDC, we’re committed to fostering a safer, more skilled demolition industry. Here’s a snapshot of our focus on Skills & Training: 📈 CCDO Cards Issued Over 1,500 Qualified Operative Cards issued, spanning Demolition Labourers to Managers. Key Regional Insights: London & Southern Counties lead with 54% of cards issued. 🔧 Addressing Safety Concerns Many CCDO Labourer cardholders are performing tasks beyond their training. To combat this, Labourer card validity will now be reduced to 2 years, encouraging employers to upskill their workforce with appropriate training. 🎯 Looking Ahead With shorter CCDO Demolition Labourer card validity, we expect to see a rise in CCDO Trained (Red) Demolition Operative cards and a shift towards structured upskilling for roles like CCDO Demolition Chargehand and CCDO Advanced Demolition Operative. 💬 CEO Duncan Rudall HonFIDE emphasises: "Upskilling is not just progress—it’s safety." 🚨 Transforming Oxford Street: M&S Redevelopment Gets the Green Light🚨 Marks & Spencer’s long-awaited redevelopment plans for their flagship Marble Arch store on Oxford Street have finally received government approval! 🎉 This significant decision, granted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, allows for the demolition and transformation of the iconic Orchard House building into a state-of-the-art retail space. The new development will include a modernised store, café, offices, and a gym—supporting 2,000 jobs and breathing new life into one of London’s most famous shopping streets. The NFDC actively supported this proposal, submitting comments to the government to emphasise the importance of enabling such projects. We believe this is a crucial step forward for the demolition and construction industries, showcasing the role of redevelopment in driving economic growth and urban regeneration.
