  • When pioneers for nature and climate unite, everyone wins. At The Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town, we witnessed something truly remarkable. Being an Earthshot Prize Finalist has reinforced our mission at NatureMetrics → to leverage the power of high integrity data to drive action and financing on the ground - and that’s exactly how we will be supporting our fellow Finalists, and our worthy Winners, in their endeavours for nature: → Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems (ATS) offers a simple, safe and reliable solution to transform industrial waste heat into electricity for use in hard to abate industries, with the potential to save gigatonnes of CO2. Their patented solution is also 98% circular, with components that can be reused, and cartridges that can be replaced as needed. → Keep IT Cool | Deliver while still fresh (KIC) provides sustainable refrigeration and smart distribution solutions for small farmers and fishers. It helps extend the shelf life of their produce, reduces spoilage, and creates more stable incomes. By improving profits and cutting down on food waste, KIC is helping build a more sustainable future for these communities. → High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC) is turning words into action, engaging with governments around the world to officially protect 30% of our land and oceans by 2030. HAC is pushing governments to commit and act to protect 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030. Since its inception, HAC has rapidly expanded its mission, signing up 120 countries to the 30×30 target and doubling its signatories since 2021. → Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative has achieved an almost unprecedented feat: saving the critically endangered Saiga Antelope from extinction. This mission has grown into one of the world’s largest conservation projects – to protect and restore Kazakhstan’s Golden Steppe. The Saiga Antelope has recovered from “critically endangered” to “near threatened” status on the IUCN Red List. From a population of just 20,000 in 2003, the steppe is now home to 2.86 million Saiga. → Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) drives behavioural change to help communities clean up waste, create jobs and build infrastructure to support circular waste management across Africa. Since 2019, they have created 70 green jobs for young people, widows, single mothers, and people with disabilities. As a result, more than 5,000 people have benefited directly or indirectly from the model. Being part of this inspirational network will help us to advance our technology, expand our network, and connect with conservationists on the ground, supporting their vital work out in the field. From here, we will continue to push forward together, tackling the task at hand with our shared knowledge. • Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) are a growing challenge for ecosystems and businesses alike. Responsible for 57% of global extinctions, and costing the global economy $423 billion annually. eDNA can detect invasive species at incredibly low densities - often before traditional monitoring methods. → This vital early warning, enabling swift, cost-effective action to stop invasive species spreading before they become unmanageable and costly. Here are a few other reasons eDNA may be the solution to your invasive species monitoring problems: 🌍 A single 1L water sample can reveal the presence of multiple species across the whole tree of life. This scalable approach provides a detailed understanding of biodiversity risks across vast areas with minimal effort compared to traditional methods. 🤝 Traditional surveys often involve diving, trapping, or handling wildlife, which can be risky for teams and stressful for ecosystems. eDNA is safer, simpler, and non-invasive - reducing workplace hazards while respecting biodiversity. ⏳ With eDNA, resources go further. eDNA sampling reduces monitoring costs and effort, saving time, and delivering actionable insights fast. At NatureMetrics we've already detected 3,472 occurrences of invasive species across 50 countries, supporting efforts to protect biodiversity and reduce risks to businesses. 🔗 Find out more about how eDNA is tackling invasive species and their impact: https://lnkd.in/ejN4SRDE

  • Earlier this week, we launched our CSRD Guide for Biodiversity and Ecosystems - a straightforward breakdown of the CSRD’s biodiversity standards, and what they mean for business. In the guide, we outline the six necessary steps to get ahead of #CSRD (ESRS E4); putting robust nature data at the heart of sustainable business decision-making. Let’s dive into the detail… STEP 1 > Find out how aligned you are with evolving regulation The first step in your CSRD journey should be assessing how well aligned your organisation is with evolving regulation. This can be achieved through conducting a simple nature maturity assessment. In response to the growing demand for clarity on regulatory alignment, including CSRD, Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), NatureMetrics has developed its own free Nature Maturity Assessment tool. This tool follows a maturity framework designed to evaluate an organisation's journey towards becoming nature positive. With this, you can qualitatively measure your company’s nature maturity, tracking changes over time, and preparing for CSRD/TNFD readiness. Instilling robust nature data into your operations will drive long-term business gains, and it all starts with our CSRD Guide. Download the guide via to access the rest of the steps! https://lnkd.in/eBKR77Vu

  • Young citizen eDNA science in action! 🌱 In the chalk grasslands on the outskirts of Winchester, there’s a wealth of biodiversity to be found - uncovered not by seasoned researchers, but by a group of young citizen scientists aged 7 to 12. Using environmental DNA (eDNA) soil sampling, the children collected 10 soil samples from the Winchester Science Centre grounds. The results? A staggering 339 species of fungi were identified, including 39 critical indicator species! This discovery adds invaluable data to conservation efforts for fungi, a group identified by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs as one of the most threatened in the UK due to insufficient information. Their achievement is part of a child-centred science and nature partnership project, funded by the Institute of Sustainability at the University of Surrey. The project aims to deepen understanding of our natural world and empower young people to become active stewards of the planet. This project showcases the remarkable power of eDNA - technology so straightforward that children can collect samples which reveal hundreds of hidden species through their DNA traces, showcasing the exceptional value of Winchester's chalk grasslands and underscoring the importance of preserving these ecosystems. For Wonderseekers, the independent children’s charity that runs the hugely popular Winchester Science Centre, this project is just one of many ways they inspire children to use science as a tool to understand and respond to global challenges. With 70% of children expressing concern about the world they will inherit (according to Save the Children), initiatives like these not only foster hope but equip young minds with the tools to make meaningful change. Congratulation to the amazing Katie Cruickshanks too for leading on such an amazing initiative and training the future generation on the power of eDNA!

  • 𝗲𝗗𝗡𝗔 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 Andrew Stringer, Forestry England's Head of Environment and Nature Recovery, explains: "The data we now have about the fungi and invertebrate species present in the nation’s forests is mind-blowing, and these new techniques are a step-change in how we monitor biodiversity. With eDNA, the guesswork is gone. We now know exactly which fungi and invertebrates are in the nation’s forests, which cover more than 250,000 hectares of land. And crucially, we know which of the many ecological functions they are performing, and which are absent. This baseline data will guide all our restoration work and show us what’s working and what needs to change.” Dr. Katie Cruickshanks, NatureMetrics Conservation Lead, highlights how eDNA data drove this action on the ground: "Working with Forestry England has been an incredible opportunity to showcase the power of eDNA in enhancing data-driven nature recovery at a national scale - and their ambitious efforts don’t stop at woodland creation. By 2026, they aim to plant at least 2,000 hectares of high-quality, mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland. Thanks to eDNA, these projects are supported by unprecedented levels of ecological insight. As Andrew puts it, these emerging technologies are transforming forest management: "Soon we’ll have ‘weather stations for nature’ throughout the nation’s forests, telling us what is happening to nature at a level of detail we’ve never had before. And all of the data we collect will be available to everyone, for free.” Learn more about Forestry England’s work and their partnership with NatureMetrics here: https://lnkd.in/evJxuhGd 📺 Watch the full video via Reuters: https://lnkd.in/eqWW7P3e

  • “Exhausting - but exhilarating”. That was the verdict from our sleep-deprived team as they returned from #COP16 in Cali, Colombia. Yes, it was a marathon of torrential rain, long queues, and questionable salsa moves... But it was also an energising and motivating event, unlike any before it. For the first time, we saw a surge of interest in driving meaningful progress for nature. The turnout said it all. 3,000 private corporations joined the dialogue on nature, and this time, they weren’t just listening. Companies shared best practices, made tangible commitments, and rolled up their sleeves to develop actionable plans. But the excitement must now translate into measurable progress. Here’s what our biodiversity experts brought back from the front lines of COP16, and what it means for businesses everywhere. ➡️ Joe Huddart, PhD 🐟, our Biodiversity Solutions Engineer, saw unprecedented collaboration: "The private sector is moving quickly. At COP16, corporates, institutional investors, and NGOs united under shared missions, recognising the critical role biodiversity plays in reducing risk and enhancing resilience." “Conversations around metrics dominated the event, but a heavy reliance on proxy data remains a barrier. "Companies can’t wait for a ‘universal’ metric. We’ve been measuring nature for decades. The tools exist now to start monitoring ecosystems with robust, peer-reviewed methods. Early adopters are already ahead in managing risk and driving meaningful impact." ➡️ Dr Vere Ross-Gillespie, our Mining Sector Lead, emphasised the progress: "In sessions like ours with Accenture and Anglo American, we moved beyond high-level discussions to focus on practical implementation. For example, Anglo American is using eDNA across their operations; from monitoring animal populations in iron ore pits to detecting invasive species at their ports." ➡️ For our Head of Conservation Benjamin Barca, the amplified role of Indigenous leaders was one of the most inspiring aspects of COP16: "We met so many brilliant Indigenous leaders, equipped with the knowledge and education to drive change. This shift from being passive participants to leading the dialogue shows the world is finally recognising their critical role as stewards of nature." So, what’s next? With reporting requirements looming, the urgency to act is mounting. Companies must move beyond ambition to implementation. Benji put it simply: "The time to act is now. Start early, invest in baseline data, and focus on measurable outcomes. The tools are here - waiting is no longer an option." • We love these photos from Mills & Reeve's day at Stoke Ferry Wetland, where the team got stuck into some hands-on eDNA data gathering! This recent collaboration alongside Albanwise Environment saw us bring 🧬 environmental DNA (eDNA) testing to the floodplains of the River Wissey, where Stoke Ferry Wetland sits within a strategically important river corridor. Surrounded by species-rich grasslands and connected to existing wetlands, this land is uniquely positioned to become a thriving ecosystem. While it faces challenges like flooding and peat soil degradation during droughts, it also holds immense potential to restore its peat soils, drawing atmospheric carbon back into the ground and supporting biodiversity. Data Collection & Analysis 🗺️ As a first step in planning the restoration, our very own Chris French trained and supported the teams from Albanwise and Mills & Reeve in collecting soil eDNA samples from the site using the NatureMetrics eDNA kits. 🧬→ As we speak, the eDNA traces in these samples are being sequenced to detect what species are lurking in the soils. We’ll identify which organisms, including bacteria, fungi and invertebrates, are already present and where improvements are needed. Additionally, we’re comparing Stoke Ferry’s eDNA to samples from existing nearby wetlands, offering a glimpse of the habitats this land could support in the next 20–30 years. Next steps: 🌱 The biodiversity insights generated will help Albanwise develop a restoration roadmap to regenerate the peat soils and create a vibrant wetland ecosystem that supports wildlife and builds climate resilience. We can’t wait to see and share the results!

#CarbonFighters cc : Célia Pomares, Tiphaine David (Croville), Yann COIC, Michel Hunsicker, Nicolas Ambrosioni 🌱, Delphine Faivre, Loic Raynal, Ninon Lamarque, Julie Gaudin, Léo Fillion, Charles Brionne, Régis Combaluzier, Camille Vittiglio, Virginie Galice
