Updates

  • We have today published the new vehicle market data for November 2024. This includes #Mopeds, #Scooters, #Motorcycles and other L-Category vehicle segments.  New registrations for November closed at a positive 9.7% compared to November 2023 equalling a market volume growth of just over 600 registrations. Tony Campbell, CEO of MCIA, said: “Whilst the market has shown some improvement, we must not be fooled, this month has witnessed further dealer closures and some worrying news regarding a major European manufacturer facing some financial challenges. As the New Labour Government press the reset button this week, I hope they have realised their early policies are not having the desired effect on the economy, quite the opposite. It is clear, consumer confidence is low, and businesses are now having to re-think plans for the future as a direct result of the changes to national insurance and minimum wage. We are calling on this Government to think carefully on what is needed to support our sector, which is able to offer so much to the UK economy, and the wider decarbonisation objectives. As we see the automotive sector grappling with the ZEV mandate, we urge Government not to make similar mistakes with the scooter, motorcycle and wider L-Category sector that currently contributes less than 0.5% of the carbon emissions from transport. The scooter, motorcycle and wider powered light vehicle sector is an important part of the future of transport solution”     View the full release, and accompanying statistical information at: https://lnkd.in/eV2zEgKe

  • The Department for Transport recently rejected default bus lane access for powered light vehicles, stating it "has no policy to improve uptake of motorcycles." Yet Zemo Partnership's Net Zero Delivery Roadmap highlights the vital role of smaller, lighter vehicles in cutting emissions and easing congestion. If the Government is serious about achieving net zero, it must urgently align its policies with these findings and support our industry.

  • PRESS RELEASE: Zemo Partnership has today published its Delivery Roadmap for Net Zero #Transport, highlighting the pivotal role of #mopeds, #motorcycles and the wider powered light vehicle (PLV) sector. The Roadmap outlines an economy-wide, multi-pathway approach, detailing the key interventions needed to reignite progress in the decarbonisation of road transport. It emphatically supports the role of smaller, lighter #vehicles as inherently more energy-efficient throughout their life cycle, while also alleviating congestion, enhancing journey times, and improving air quality. Zemo’s findings call into question the Department for Transport’s rejection of default bus lane access and its accompanying statement that the Government has “no policy to encourage greater use of motorcycles.” If the Government is committed to decarbonising transport, enhancing urban efficiency, and ensuring affordable and greener personal mobility in suburban and rural areas, a decisive policy shift is urgently needed. Seeking to improve uptake of PLVs, the Roadmap urges the Government to begin simplifying PLV user licensing by 2026. The previous administration committed to a licensing review before the election; MCIA calls on the Government to retain this pledge and initiate the review process without delay. In addition to licence simplification, the Roadmap outlines a suite of transformative policies to decarbonise and modernise transport. These include increasing awareness of PLV benefits among transport planners, stimulating the industrial supply chain, reforming outdated regulation, and implementing grants and incentives to encourage businesses and consumers to adopt PLVs. Welcoming the report, MCIA CEO Tony Campbell said: “I welcome the publication of Zemo Partnership’s ‘Delivery Roadmap for Net Zero Transport’. Its evidence-based findings underscore the importance of a multi-path approach to achieving net zero, emphasising the critical role of smaller, lighter vehicles. The roadmap recommends urgent policy measures to drive the uptake of mopeds, motorcycles, and other powered light vehicles. I hope this document serves as a wake-up call for the Government to fully harness the L-Category sector’s potential to accelerate #decarbonisation — the time for action is long overdue. I particularly support the document’s call for a user licensing review for the L-Category sector as a matter of urgency. Since launching our A Licence to Net Zero campaign last October, MCIA has been making the case that simplifying the licensing regime is a prerequisite to improving adoption of energy-efficient personal mobility and encouraging a shift away from #congestion-inducing #cars and #vans.” #motorcycle #scooter #moped #netzero #licensing #

I encourage her to view our sector as an opportunity. With decisive, swift action on long-neglected policy areas—such as licensing and vehicle regulation, supported by a pragmatic, open-minded approach to phase out — the Government can achieve quick, impactful wins. For too long, successive governments have delayed progress on key issues for our industry. Now is the time to seize the opportunity, partner with industry, and leverage the powered light vehicle sector to deliver on your missions. By committing to supporting and updating the Action Plan, together we can secure a thriving, resilient future for iconic UK brands like #Triumph, Royal Enfield, #BSA, #Norton, and #CCM. With the right policy landscape, the Government can support new, innovative businesses like #Maeving, driving economic growth, boosting productivity and creating high-skilled jobs. Simplifying user licensing to improving uptake of smaller, more-energy efficient vehicles will accelerate the stagnating decarbonisation of road transport and slash congestion across the country. Modernising regulations will foster innovation, creating exciting new vehicle types that can transform urban and sub-urban mobility. The opportunities are endless, Government has a willing partner in industry to make them a reality. All we need is a Secretary of State ready to work with us." It was not just the place to see the latest bikes and apparel from over 50 motorcycle brands, it was a full day of entertainment - which for the first time included the enormously popular 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐛, where our new host 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐛𝐛 informed the audience with excellent product insights, interviewing many engineers and product managers from several manufacturers. The 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐛 was partnered by Machine Shop, who throughout the week shared tips on how to carry out basic bike maintenance along with sharing knowledge on many “black art” subjects such as achieving the best setting for your bike’s suspension. Tuesday and Thursday welcomed over 300 students from 11 colleges/universities to the event, where the goal was to show what a great industry this is to consider as a career option, alongside the benefits of becoming a new rider. Many of the students that spent the day with us left inspired, and excited by the opportunity. Early feedback has been excellent saying students were blown away by what they saw and experienced. Supported by the British Superbike Championship, the “𝐁𝐒𝐁 𝐑𝐢𝐃𝐄 𝐒𝐢𝐦 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞” was, as expected massively popular, seeing over 1,500 people take to the “virtual” track, pitting their skills against other competitors throughout the week. Again, another new feature of entertainment taking place at MCL 24. The “pièce de résistance” of this year’s event was the first of its kind indoor Festival and Black Horse Festival Stage, hosted by 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐭 and 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐦, where the crowds marvelled at the skills of the professional Trials, Stunt and Freestyle Motocross riders, in addition to meeting many of the top riders from the British and World Superbike Championships. If you think that was all - #MCL24 topped the week off with an incredible festival night of music and entertainment taking place in the #Festival Zone, featuring the Rick Parfitt Jr Band and DJ Rosie, where over 1,200 guests rocked the night away, it really was an incredible spectacle to top the week off! Planning for MCL 25 will soon be underway where our challenge will be to continue evolving, developing and generating new ideas, with the ultimate goal of creating new audiences, riders and helping to deliver a vibrant future for the industry.
