As the sun sets on 2024, my reflections on the U.S. legal market this year: - On 1 January 2024 there was cautious optimism that things would improve after a rocky and largely flat 2023. Few would have predicted just how well so many firms have done this year. - Most transactional lawyers will be needing a break over the holidays. Whilst H1 was slower for some transactional lawyers (particularly M&A), H2 has been extremely busy for the majority. - Litigators have also been extremely busy - evidenced by the incredible bonuses many of the litigation boutiques have been paying out to associates. Boies Schiller tops the bonus league tables after paying some associates $1million bonuses. - The lateral partner market has been one of the busiest on record. There were several eye opening team moves this year that demonstrated that no firm is untouchable when it comes to losing partners to competitors (well except maybe for Wachtell...). - Partner compensation was a hugely controversial topic. Many firms have been forced to change compensation structures over the past year in order to stay competitive and to retain talent. Several firms introduced non-equity tiers or shifted to alternative compensation models (e.g. black box or modified lockstep). - If the mood going into 2024 was cautious optimism, the mood going into 2025 is optimism. The transactional markets are healthier this year, litigators remain busy, and proposed regulatory changes should keep the regulatory attorneys busy. A big thank-you to all of our clients, candidates, friends and connections we have worked with across the U.S. from your Marsden US team. Wishing you all a healthy and prosperous 2025. • In the second of our series of reflections on the past year, Marsden's Australia head Jonathan Walmsley shares his thoughts on the market and what might be in store for 2025.

    Managing Director, Marsden Australia

𝙍𝙚𝙛𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙜𝙤𝙣𝙚: Australia has seen some big-ticket partner moves this year for some record offers, which have in the eyes of some commentators, permanently shifted the Australian landscape in terms of partner compensation. There is definitely no more glass ceilings at the $2m or even $3m mark for partners with significant books, or brand profiles big enough to be recognised as game changers. Partner compensation for some has reached $7m+. At Special Counsel Level, the glass ceiling of $300k has also been smashed and the top band for Special Counsel can now sit at $350K plus bonus, closing the gap even more between Counsel and junior salaried partner. First Year Senior Associates are now earning $180-190K at top tier firms. Compensation all round has increased at the #biglaw end of town. We’ve also seen some big-name international firms downsizing significantly and one big brand shock closure. When it comes to Australian and New Zealand lawyers looking for International moves, it’s been a tough year. Corporate lawyers have found it tough and international roles did not open up in the way we expected. Where there have been international roles open to APAC lawyers the bar to entry has been high and the competition stiff. This means that the queue of lawyers looking to leave ANZ is backing up so when London. Dubai, New York, really open their doors again to ANZ lawyers, we are going to see associates leaving in significant numbers. Whilst China has seen the exit of 14 US firms, and on balance there is still movement out of Hong Kong, Singapore has started to move again and some new or “renewed” entrants. Whilst still a highly competitive, and some would say overly lawyered market, we are seeing recruitment activity return and we look forward to working more closely with our clients in this vibrant low tax jurisdiction in 2025. • Some great reflections on the past year from Angela Floydd, Marsden's 𝗜𝗻-𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 Head of Europe and Co-head of International.

Specialist in global General Counsel appointments and building high performing, diverse international legal, compliance, privacy and IP teams for multinational companies and law firms

Reflecting on our in-house work this year, one key competency has stood out across our General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer searches: the ability to lead and adapt to change. What’s struck me is how universal this expectation has been, regardless of geography, size of the business, or industry. From Europe to the US, whether it’s a fast-growing startup or a well-established public/private company, the demand for leaders who can embrace and thrive through change has never been stronger. The qualities we and our clients have consistently looked for: adaptability, strategic foresight and resilience are proving to be fundamental for success in leadership roles. Here’s what that’s looked like in practice: -Vision in uncertainty: leaders who can navigate ambiguity and still chart a clear path forward. -Agility in strategy: the ability to pivot when needed, without losing sight of long-term goals. -Driving culture: fostering a way of thinking where change is embraced as an opportunity for growth and action is taken. -Building resilience: creating frameworks that solve immediate challenges while positioning the organisation for sustained success. It’s not enough to react to change, the expectation is for legal and compliance leaders to drive change, build trust, and create stability. Looking back on the incredible clients, candidates and colleagues I’ve had the pleasure to work with this year, one thing is clear - adaptability isn’t just a skill, it’s a mindset. As we head into 2025 with rapid advancements in technology, sustainability goals and shifting workplace dynamics, this mindset will only become more critical. Wishing everyone in my network continued success in embracing change and leading with boldness. Whether navigating challenges or driving innovation, 2025 looks to be a year of transformative growth! #LegalLeadership #Innovation #DrivingChange #GeneralCounsel #ComplianceLeadership For support on legal and compliance leadership and key team hires in 2025 and beyond, please get in touch with one of the Marsden In-house team: UK Permanent: Kate Bramwell, Karen Glass, Sarita Rai UK/Europe Interim: Amanda Chard UK/Europe FS : Liam Richardson Europe: Angela Floydd, Anu Malhotra Middle East/APAC: Aaron Faith, Matthew Oakey US/LATAM: Angela Floydd, Karen Glass Australia: Jonathan Walmsley

  • As we approach the end of the year, it’s a good time to stop and take stock about your current work. Ask yourself: 1. Have I 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 this year – either been promoted or moved towards a promotion? 2. What have I 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱? 3. Am I 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 this role? If you are not happy with any of your answers and don’t want another year of standing still, now’s the time to work on a plan. If you have some time off over the festive break that is the ideal space to get your CV and deal sheet in order ready for when firms are actively recruiting from January.
