About us

This company's aim is to give back space to Nature. We wish to inspire a greater understanding and appreciation of the natural world. The funds generated from sales via our online shop are re-invested in our nature reserve projects. We offer tree planting and other dedications, wildlife habitat boxes, and ecofriendly products. We also offer Carbon Offsetting for individuals or businesses who wish to offset their carbon footprint by planting trees. Woodland sponsorship is offered to companies wishing to improve their ‘green’ credentials. These make an excellent PR story and are perfect to use for company away days. We have already planted thousands of trees at our Sylvan Nature Reserve on land that used to be for grazing. We have planted 7 thousand trees at Bank Woods and will be planting many more, as well as supporting the natural regeneration of our precious Ancient Woodland.

  • Our Memorial Woodland in Nidderdale. A really special final resting place.

Memorial Woodland. I visited four of our sites on Thursday. This is one of the most special. This is our Memorial Woodland in Nidderdale. Here the trees are planted with the cremation ashes of a loved one. We have almost sixty individual, meaningful, significant trees here. Each bringing new life from one that was lost. The families have unlimited access to this lovely place, and enjoy the peace and gorgeous views. It may not be our wildest or most biodiverse place, but it holds deep emotions, and rich re-connection with nature for the families who choose it as a final resting place.

  • Here’s one of our many ‘official’ veteran trees, at our newest site. It’s been capturing carbon for at least 200 years, and will do so for many years to come.

Carbon Capture Here’s something amazing that will capture atmospheric carbon dioxide It will also: 💚 produce oxygen 💚 support biodiversity 💚 stabilise soil 💚 reduce flooding 💚 create a local microclimate 💚 provide habitat, food, shelter 💚 create shade and cool 💚 contribute to the water cycle 💚 give us a thing of beauty This is a veteran oak tree, at our Chopgate Woodpasture. It’s in Bilsdale, in the North York Moors. #trees

  • One of the most satisfying things we do, is to work with companies and individuals to help their dreams of helping the planet come true. We were delighted to work closely with We Seal, to support them in several ways: 💚 Christopher Neave helped them to calculate their carbon footprint. 💚 Helen Neave and Chris hosted their conservation day, placing mulch mats for some young trees, with younger family members joining in. 💚And finally we have helped them plant a woodland! Thank you to Richard Hobson, Sue Hobson and all the team for being great to work with ... and for your lovely words below. "At We Seal, we are fiercely committed to sustainability, passionate about minimising our environmental impact and ultimately working towards becoming carbon neutral. Based in Yorkshire, we wanted to partner with a like-minded local organisation, to facilitate a carbon mitigation tree planting programme in a hands-on way so that our team could get directly involved, learn more about the natural world and see change in action on their doorstep.    Make it Wild offer all this and so much more, with Helen and Christopher having developed a true passion-project. Their support with our carbon calculations has been invaluable, as has their guidance throughout our endeavour to plant 5,000 trees by 2030 (4,000 of which have already been planted!) Our team were also able to spend a day getting stuck in with conservation work in Bank Woods in North Yorkshire, laying mulch mats at the base of young trees and witnessing first-hand the incredible work Make it Wild do with creating wild spaces, ponds and wildflower meadows.   The holistic approach that Make it Wild has towards nature restoration and protection is nothing short of inspiring, and perfectly aligns with our company ethos around sustainability and the importance of protecting our beautiful planet. We are grateful to have formed such a fantastic local partnership and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend both the organisation and their incredible team; we look forward to working together for many years to come".

  • We are so proud to work on this fantastic project! North Yorkshire, where we are based, is desperately de-forested. We have planted 50,000 trees as part of the Northern Forest, in addition to the the 20,000 originally planted by Helen and Christopher Neave in 2011.

🌱 Nearly eight million trees have been planted for the #NorthernForest so far. 🌳The project began in 2018 when we joined with The Mersey Forest, City of Trees, Humber Forest and White Rose Forest with a vision to plant 50 million trees in an area with just 7.6% tree cover. 🏡 The Northern Forest has locked up thousands of tonnes of carbon, established habitats for wildlife, and provided access to nature to 300,000 households. 💪 But there is still much to do. It's now vital that the Government continues to back the project. 👉 Learn more: https://bit.ly/3zdpJQ8 Community Forest Trust

Do I miss .... driving into the consultants' car park? ... popping on the train to London to chair a high level panel? ... making decisions which will impact surgical education across the UK? ... presenting my research to lecture theatre full of academics? Not really. Supporting nature feels like coming home. Being greeted at Bank Woods most mornings by this gorgeous hare helps that feeling.

Nature is awesome! And the feeling of awe is good for us! When we experience awe, 💚 our levels of dopamine, a ‘feel-good’ hormone rise! 💚 our levels of cortisol, a stress hormone fall! This not only makes us feel better, but it’s good for our health. Here’s a truly awesome fact about nature that Christopher Neave and I learnt last night, at the Beguiling Bat experience Make It Wild hosted: Bats navigate by echo-location, and specifically use it to locate their prey, which is usually insects and moths… … and here’s the awesome fact … Some moths have evolved a defence mechanism of ‘jamming’ bats’ echolocation by emitting their own bursts of ultrasound. How awesome is that?! The photo shows a common pipistrelle, one of the bats we encountered last night. Thank you to David Watkins, bat expert, for the fact, the photo, and the fantastic experience last night. We have a programme of events and activities which will bring you closer to the awesomeness of nature! Link in comments.
