Refresh » Repurpose » Reimagine Over 80% of the buildings that will be standing by 2050 have already been built, so we need to focus on retrofitting these existing structures if we’re to achieve net zero by the same year. Having worked on various scales of retrofit across multiple sectors, we know there are no cookie-cutter solutions. Therefore, we categorise the scope of works required for any given project using our sliding scale of intervention. In part 1 of our three-part retrofit blog series, Head of Sustainability Oliver Hall outlines our approach to retrofit by revisiting some of our favourite case studies: https://lnkd.in/etFFTcNP #retrofit #makeneutral #sustainabledesign #makearchitects

📢 A Sustainability First at 30 Duke Street St James's 🌍 We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with Mace, OAG Ltd, and Norsk Hydro on the next phase of 30 Duke Street St James’s – a project that sets new benchmarks for sustainable development in the UK. This state-of-the-art office and retail development is pioneering the use of Hydro CIRCAL 100R—aluminium made from 100% recycled post-consumer scrap material—making it the first commercial development in the UK to deliver this groundbreaking material. Hydro CIRCAL 100R represents a breakthrough in recycled aluminium, with a near-zero carbon footprint (0.417 kg CO₂e per kg of aluminium), which is 94% lower than the global average for primary aluminium. Via this partnership, we aim for 81% of the aluminium used to be Hydro’s CIRCAL 100R, which will deliver a 82t CO₂e saving compared to standard aluminium. 🌱 Did you know at 30 Duke Street St James’s 🔹 We’re reusing nearly 450 tonnes of reclaimed steel which will generate approx. 755t CO₂e savings 🔹 33,645 kg of the existing Portland stone will be re-used avoiding almost 62,000kg of new stone being excavated 🔹 Via the Saint-Gobain Glass Forever Scheme we’re recycling 30 tonnes of glass. All new windows will be glazed with Saint-Gobain ORAE recycled glass. 🔹 Targets include BREEAM Outstanding, WELL Platinum, and NABERS UK 5 stars and a fossil fuel-free, fully electric design. With Mace as the principal contractor, designed by Make Architects in collaboration with Elliott Wood and Hoare Lea, this circular and carbon-efficient development establishes new sustainability benchmarks, serving as a model for future projects focused on circular economy principles and environmental responsibility. The second of our two-part reflection series on #MakeNeutralDay 2024 sees director Jason Parker sum up the final two workshops: Reusing our city and Material Matters. 🛠️ Our 80 Charlotte Street scheme for Derwent London was the focus of Head of Sustainability Oliver Hall’s creative reuse workshop. Makers explored various design approaches using our retrofit sliding scale of intervention — refresh, repurpose, reimagine — as well as the option of new build to determine the most suitable approach for the original site if the project were undertaken today. 🧱 Ian Hunter from the Materials Council led an engaging session on calculating the embodied carbon of materials, combining the physical sample library with our online database. Various materials were evaluated by weight, volume, and area to calculate their overall embodied carbon. 🌳 Make Neutral Day wrapped up with architect Peter Greaves sharing an update on our studio’s annual carbon footprint. On the fourth day of Christmas, the Great British Engineering Adventure gave to me… London Wall Place, where you can find remnants of the Roman wall that once encircled the stronghold that was Londinium. Dating back to around 200 AD, the wall originally stood over 6m high and stretched 2.5 miles around the city, defining its boundaries until the later Middle Ages. Today, a new development by Make Architects seamlessly integrates two new office buildings with a terraced garden with both the ruins of the Roman wall and the medieval St Alphage church tower. Contemporary weathered steel bridges gently curve overhead, connecting to the 1960s Barbican highwalks and providing you with a pathway to explore the city beyond. The Great British Engineering Adventure is a collaboration between Buro Happold and Footways London. Explore the city of London by bike or foot, and discover engineering wonders that will capture not only your imagination, but also kickstart those healthy habits well before the new year. The decision to retrofit or build new takes many factors into account, few of which are comparable between schemes as no two buildings are the same. 🔗In the third instalment of our retrofit blog series, Head of Sustainability Oliver Hall delves into the key findings of our collaborative study with The University of Sheffield's RISE Group and provides recommendations for developing new build schemes and retrofitting existing ones: https://lnkd.in/gaMvfjYk The research explored the carbon impact of various retrofit scenarios for a hypothetical office building. #retrofit #newbuild #wholelifecarbon #embodiedcarbon #operationalcarbon #makeneutral #sustainabledesign #makearchitects Image: 36 Carrington Street, Sydney for Brookfield Properties. Refurbishment of a 10-storey office building. Our design stripped the building back to its superstructure and reimagined new frontages, services and interiors.

Exciting news from Ipswich – as featured on BBC News! Since 2022, we’ve been collaborating with the young people and staff at local Ipswich charity For Children & Young People (4YP) to reimagine their existing facilities. Through a series of co-design workshops led by Makers in our Aspire team, we’ve worked to equip and empower them with the skills to have agency over the direction of their new hub space. The journey so far has been incredible. Together, we’ve transformed their drawings and models into fully realised virtual worlds, presenting these back to the wider community in Ipswich to help bring their vision to life. 4YP’s CEO Gavin Stone shared his thoughts on our ongoing partnership: “Make Architects have been instrumental in supporting 4YP to better understand what children and young people in Ipswich need as a ‘safe place’. This included visiting 4YP to run creative workshops and host a cohort of youngsters at their London studios, enabling the creation of physical and VR models of their ideas and designs. These have been used to identify a prospective premises, which Make have produced some initial plans for, to support a major funding application. Their expertise has been invaluable, and this project would not have progressed without their ingenuity, kindness and generous support.” We’re hopeful for 4YP as they continue to explore funding opportunities to make their plans a reality. 🔗Read the full BBC article: https://lnkd.in/egV7VP8B #4YP #ipswichdesignweek #codesign #aspireoutreach #makearchitects

Fantastic evening at the copper box watching #uts tennis incredible to see the box that rocks still rocking. @MakeArchitects . As a huge tennis fan incredible to see this in one of my projects. Even better to sit next to Edward Fane and reminisce of how design for legacy and overlay for games has been testament to the on going success of this venue.

Some lovely shots by Adam Bruzzone of our full turnkey interior concept for Adelaide Marriott Hotel's signature Penny Blue restaurant within the historic General Post Office (GPO) building. Our concept is oriented around the preparation and display of dishes – a play on the weighing of postage parcels that took place here in the past. A sensitive intervention, our design respects the original heritage, materiality and detailing of one of Australia’s few remaining GPOs to deliver a new F&B destination for clients Marriott Hotels and Greaton Development. 🔗Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eJvrruWf #adelaidemarriott #adelaidegpo #hospitalitydesign #restaurantinteriors #makearchitects
