This afternoon, #LAIN’s Childcare Working Group took part in our first masterclass on ways #LondonAnchors can support the early years sector. This focussed on transferring Apprenticeship Levy to the early years sector. Staff shortages in the sector are having an impact on parents’ ability to access good quality childcare and return to the workplace. Anchor institutions can help by transferring unspent apprenticeship levy to help create earn-as-you-learn roles in the sector. LAIN members have transferred over £2.8m in unspent apprenticeship levy to London-based businesses in the last three years, but directing this to early years’ providers is a new area of focus. 💶 🧑🧑🧒🧒 We’d like to thank our guest speakers, @Kevin O’Neill from Workwhile and James Lloyd from Transport for London, who talked about how Transport for London has used its apprenticeship levy to support a Montessori nursery and not-for-profit preschool. It was inspiring to hear theory turned into practice. 👏 Thanks to the following organisations for attending our masterclass: UCL, London Fire Brigade, Greater London Authority, NHS England, Transport for London, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, London Borough of Lambeth, BusinessLDN, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and special thanks our Co-Chairs, Clara Cezar de Andrade Hallot and Edward Richardson #childcare #apprenticeshiplevy #earlyyears #anchors

How Green is Your Team? 🌿 That’s the question we’ve been asking ourselves since LAIN's team participated in climate literacy training hosted by the Greater London Authority. While the overwhelming scientific evidence of human-driven climate change is not new, the training gave us deeper insights into the devastating impacts of global warming and reignited our commitment to take action. Following the session, we made both individual and collective pledges to contribute to tackling the crisis. We are inspired by the incredible work of colleagues across #LAIN who are embedding #sustainability in their organisations and taking meaningful steps to reduce emissions. The Mayor of London’s ambitious goal for London to achieve #NetZero by 2030 is just five years away. As this picture reminds us, there is still much to do, but together, we can create meaningful change. If you’re wondering how to start, signing up for a climate literacy course is a great first step! Finally, we want to celebrate and thank our LAIN members who are championing environmental initiatives and sustainability in their workplaces: Greater London Authority, Capital City College Diocese of London, King's College London, London Fire Brigade, London Higher, London Jewish Forum, London South East Colleges, London & South East Education Group, New City College, Newham College of Further Education NHS, Transport for London, University of London, Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC), UCL, University of East London, Association of Colleges, Bloomberg Associates Your efforts are making a real difference! 🌍✨

Yesterday, our wonderful co-chair, Martin Machray chaired his final LAIN Steering Committee for us, as he retires at the end of this week. It has been a privilege having his support and leadership for the past three years. Thank you, Martin, for championing LAIN, for your commitment to partnership working, your counsel and your good humour! We wish you all the very best. We are delighted that the equally wonderful Lizzie Smith will be taking on the Co-Chair role alongside the brilliant Professor Wendy Thomson CBE continuing the leadership of #NHS and University of London for this agenda.

We were thrilled to host an international conference at City Hall with the Greater London Authority, Transport for London's Central Responsible Procurement Team, and #LAIN's Procurement Working Group. 🌍✈️ A group of delegates representing six European cities that belong to the Procura+ network joined LAIN Procurement and Green New Deal working group members today to discuss how sustainable procurement impacts urban transportation. In this session, chaired by Tim Rudin, we explored the role of "green last mile deliveries" in reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality. Workshop participants discussed sustainable procurement opportunities and challenges aligned with London's Net Zero and Responsible Procurement commitments. Grateful to support this insightful event! #GreenNewDeal #SustainableProcurement #NetZero 💚 @ICLEI Europe

Our Head of the London Anchor Institutions Network team Souraya Ali was happy to be asked by NHS London to present at today’s NHS anchors workshop on addressing the barriers of structural racism. Discussing this topic with so many NHS partners passionate about tackling health inequalities head on was a real privilege. We heard from excellent speakers June Farquharson, Catherine Mbema and Karen Steadman who spotlighted the need for wholesale system changes through anchor organisations to drive better health and economic outcomes for Londoners from minoritised ethnic backgrounds. Agatha Nortley-Meshe led the workshop challenging us to come up with practical solutions to structural racism. Improving health outcomes for London’s communities is not purely the job of the NHS. Communities want access to good work with fair pay, and career progression in inclusive workplaces. Good work and good health are intrinsically linked. #Anchors in health called upon #LAIN to support them on this journey. And we’re more than happy to. We’re committed to using collaboration, shared learning and problem solving to address racial inequalities and create a fairer, greener more prosperous London.
