In our conversation with industry leaders Yvonne Vivers of EQUANS and Maree Myerscough of Aquila Clean Energy APAC, we discussed the challenges of how the in-house legal team is perceived, the importance of an agile team structure, and how to handle workload peaks by engaging additional support. Struggling with attrition? Our 2023 global report, “Under Pressure”, showed that the most widespread emerging issue for 2024 was staff morale and retention. Fast forward to now and our foresight proved to be right as discussion around a potential attrition wave for in-house legal teams is prominent. Although law remains a top career choice (for example in the US, Law School Admission Council (LSAC) report a 26.2% increase in ABA 2025 applicants), for in-house teams, the ground is shifting. But what’s driving it? ⬅️Increasingly buoyant labor markets offering legal professionals who work in-house more attractive work/life balance through alternative legal career paths. In the last 4 years, the number of lawyers we have working as consultants on assignment across the globe has grown by approx. 27%. This suggests a growing interest in moving away from traditional in-house careers to work more flexibly. ➡️Pressurized working environments and a lack of career development and training opportunities. An attrition wave is likely to lead to disruption in operations and reduced efficiency, as well as increasing the workload for remaining staff. It also results in loss of knowledge and elevates risk from compliance gaps and delayed projects. There is also potential for heightened costs with reliance on expensive external counsel and an increase in recruitment costs to replace lost talent. So, how can in-house leaders adapt to get ahead of the attrition wave? ✅Encourage open communication: Create a culture where team members can voice their needs and concerns - and be truly heard. ✅Boost morale through connection: Regular check-ins and team-building exercises can help. ✅Empower growth: Investing in training and career development to upskill your team will enhance engagement and job satisfaction - plus help handle evolving challenges. ✅Prioritize wellbeing: Build out mental health and resilience initiatives to show your commitment to your team’s success, both personally and professionally. ✅Embrace flexibility: Flexible work policies support a better work-life balance ✅Lighten the load: Look at ways to reduce pressure whether by leaning on interim legal staff during busy periods, adopting tech solutions, or outsourcing complete workstreams. Is an attrition wave the start of a meaningful evolution? If legal leaders can adapt to keep their talent, it will create positive practices to help retain future flight risks, attract new people and build a culture of loyalty. #inhouselegal #legaltalent
