Today the Office for National Statistics released figures showing the rates of sudden infant death syndrome (also known as SIDS and cot death), have remained very similar. We’re worried that SIDS deaths aren’t decreasing fast enough. Evidence is suggesting that we’re still seeing the aftermath of Covid-19 affecting this number. During the pandemic, those working within our maternity services were pushed to the extreme, and health visitors redeployed to front line services. This left families with fewer experts to support them, and less information on safer sleep at their disposal. More children than ever before are living in temporary accommodation. And these families may be forced into unsafe sleeping practices with their baby, such as making their own beds out of blankets and pillows, or unsafely co-sleeping with family members. All of which put the baby at higher risk of SIDS. We cannot go back to a world where over 1,300 babies die of SIDS in the UK every year, like it was 1989. We’ve worked tirelessly to reduce that number to 171, and we won’t rest until no baby dies suddenly or unexpectedly. Our plea to you today is to share our safer sleep information, and this video, far and wide, to anyone who needs it. We will be there, for every baby and every family, but we can all do our bit to ensure that every baby has a safe sleep space, because it saves lives.

  • This week is ASB Awareness Week and we’ve been taking action all over the county against ASB; including recognising some of our own Community Heroes who go above and beyond on a daily basis to bring people together, solve problems and prevent ASB 🚓 First we have PCSO James who patrols Chorley and the South Ribble, doing all sorts from clearing pathways for the elderly, to visiting a centre for those with special needs to help them develop a relationship with the Police, to developing a CCTV watch group with residents and councillors to reduce crime. Amongst all this and other things, he’s even set up the Police Pals scheme; a brilliant initiative to connect with youngsters who have a fear of the Police, want to join the organisation or those who are at risk of criminality. Then we have PCSO Halima who is based over in Blackburn and Darwen, who during the disorder earlier this year, was a calming presence within her community. She forged strong connections, particularly within Blackburn and the Asian community to ensure that people (especially women), had a voice and somewhere to share their worries, thoughts and feelings. By integrating herself into these communities, she’s provided a safe space for people to talk and now delivers presentations on hate crimes, encouraging and supporting those who have been subjected to these types of crime to make reports. Well done James and Halima, you really are Community Heroes! 🌟 Do you know your own Community Heroes? Tag them below and let them know! #ASBWeek #OpCenturion #CommunityHeroes

  • Every year, more than 1700 people die on UK roads. Another 30,000 receive serious, life-changing injuries. If a member of your family was in a serious accident whilst on the roads, who would come to speak to you and guide you through the next steps? Knocking on the door of a victim’s family or next of kin is never easy, but PC Helen Holliday has been doing it for the past 22 years (she’s our longest serving ‘FLO’!) and with this week being Road Safety Week, we asked her more about her role as a Family Liaison Officer. Watch below to hear Helen speak more about how she helps families who have had their worlds turned upside down in a matter of minutes 👇 Thank you to Helen and all of our Family Liaison Officers who do one of the most difficult jobs, each and every day 💙 To find out more about the help that is available for victims and their families, visit the Brake website here 👉 https://orlo.uk/YHjKo #RoadSafetyWeek
