  • When purchasing an air conditioning (A/C) system, it's important to consider several factors to ensure the best choice for your specific needs. Here’s what to keep in mind, using SI units for clarity: 1. Type of A/C System Split-System: Consists of an outdoor and indoor unit, ideal for cooling individual rooms or open-plan spaces efficiently. Ducted System: Provides whole-home cooling through ductwork, offering more even temperatures but with higher installation costs. Portable or Window Units: Suitable for small spaces or rental properties but less efficient for larger areas. Heat Pumps: These systems provide both heating and cooling, making them suitable for areas with varying seasonal temperatures. 2. Cooling Capacity (kW Rating) The system’s cooling capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW). It’s crucial to select a unit based on the size of the area to ensure efficiency: Small rooms (up to 14 m²): 1.5 - 2 kW. Medium rooms (14-33 m²): 2 - 3.5 kW. Large rooms (33-50 m²): 3.5 - 5 kW. Choosing an undersized system won’t cool the space effectively, while an oversized one can lead to inefficiencies and higher costs. 3. Energy Efficiency Look for units with a high EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) or COP (Coefficient of Performance). The higher these values, the more efficient the system. Inverter Technology: Systems with inverter technology adjust the compressor speed based on cooling needs, providing better energy efficiency and temperature stability. Energy Efficiency Labels: Check for systems that meet energy efficiency standards like the European Union’s Energy Label with an A+++ rating. 4. Installation Requirements Space and Placement: Make sure the outdoor unit is placed in a well-ventilated area, preferably shaded and with enough clearance for proper airflow. The indoor unit should be located to optimize air distribution. Ductwork: If installing a ducted system, consider the state of existing ducts or whether new ones are needed, which can increase costs. Professional Installation: Have your system installed by licensed professionals to ensure proper operation and long-term performance. 5. Operating Costs More efficient systems may have higher upfront costs but will save you money in the long run through lower electricity consumption. Consider long-term costs such as regular maintenance, which is crucial for the system’s efficiency and longevity. 6. Climate Your local climate plays a key role in choosing the right system. In cooler climates, a reverse-cycle heat pump might be more economical since it can heat and cool. In humid areas, prioritize systems with good dehumidification capabilities. 7. Warranty and Reliability Ensure the system has a good warranty that covers both parts and labour. Warranties typically vary between manufacturers, and some offer extended warranties when installed by a certified professional. Choose brands with a reputation for reliability and good customer support.
