Reflecting on a recent successful IoD East of England event in Cambridge with our partners Metro Bank (UK) and Greenwoods Legal LLP. We focussed on how businesses can grow, and exit and the route in-between. Stephen Jarvis from Greenwoods Legal LLP shared his experience of steering a deal to a successful outcome. 🔷 Always focus on the end goal 🔷 Surround yourself with the right people to help you get there whether inside your business or as part of your advisory team 🔷 The Stockdale Paradox which in this context could be summarised as keep the faith but confront difficulties head on. I gave a market update on M&A in 2024 going into 2025 🔷 2024 was an active if choppy market but holding up well. 🔷 The budget has made some waves but not big enough to capsize any boats. 🔷 The expected M&A rush pre budget came to pass, and a mini-rush expected before the end of the tax year. 🔷 2025 likely to see continued activity with well funded active corporate buyers, and Private Equity funds with cash to invest both competing to buy good targets. 🔷 Private Equity also sellers with more than half of all Private Equity investments worldwide over 4 years old (according to PitchBook) and so likely to be sold before too long. 🔷 Prices being paid for SMEs holding or even firming up a little according to MarktoMarket James Harrison from Metrobank outlined their offering for transaction and growth financing - stressing that they're very much open for businsess Entrepreneur Jacqui Kavanagh shared valuable insights of having sold and built businesses in an interview with Steve Stafford of Metro Bank (UK). 🔷 Watch you cash 🔷 Follow the market opportunity and don’t be distracted by what your competitors are up to 🔷 Know your WHY, be sure of your end goal 🔷 Work ON not IN the business.
