The Working at Height 2024 conference ended with a Q&A between Lindsey Anderson, Editor Access, Lift and Handlers and Peter Douglas, CEO & MD at IPAF. Lindsey started with a mention when Peter worked at rental company, Nationwide Platforms, spearheading a program that set safety standards across depots in the UK. He reiterated working with large general contractors to build partnerships, previously he worked with such companies to help them prevent problems before they happen. Reflecting on presentations from the day on safety culture and technology advancements, Lindsey asked if there were any quick wins to be made for rental companies. While Peter saw no quick wins in particular but in collaboration, they all work together. Peter concluded the Q&A and conference by saying all workers should feel they can pick up the phone and stop a job if they feel its not being carried out safely. “Workers should feel empowered to speak out and stop the job. Make sure the job gets done, but only done safely.” #workingatheight2024

The second panel of the Working at Height Conference was a discussion on 'Technology's role in Work at Height', an exploration of how innovation is transforming the access industry. Hosted by Euan Youdale, the session brought together David Swan and James G. (Jim) Colvin, who shared their insights on some of the pressing questions in the sector. From the electrification of equipment to tackling the skilled labor shortage, the dialogue centred on the role of AI, telematics, and training simulators in solving real-world challenges. "When is a MEWP being productive? Data drives actions" - David Swan "Data can help transform training and what areas might need improvement and how we deliver training." - Jim Colvin The speakers explored how partnerships between companies like Trackunit and Serious Industrial Motion Simulators Inc. can pave the way for autonomous solutions. These discussions highlighted how critical it is for innovation to align with industry needs and how the future of work at height can be revolutionized through collaboration and technology. #workingatheight2024

Director of Training for Genie North America, Scott Owyen carried on the afternoon with a presentation on how technology is changing the way MEWP training is delivered. Looking at how advancements like AR, VR, and AI are revolutionizing the way Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) training is conducted. Virtual Reality (VR) creates fully immersive experiences that transport operators into virtual environments, making it ideal for refresher training and advanced scenarios. Augmented Reality (AR) enhances the physical world with digital overlays, providing targeted, on-the-job support. Meanwhile, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is seeing rapid adoption, unlocking smarter, more tailored applications for training and beyond. #workingatheight2024

Bart Krzysztofek, Product Safety Training Supervisor at Skyjack, delivered an insightful presentation on “Selecting the Right PFPE – and Why It Matters.” He emphasized the importance of lanyards, highlighting the need to choose the right type for different situations, ensure the shortest possible length is always used, and consult the manufacturer to determine the appropriate lanyard for each scenario. Bart also reminded the audience of the ABCs of PFPE: Anchorage, Bodywear, and Connectors, while driving home the ultimate goal: “Don’t fall out of the platform – prioritize fall restraint.” #workingatheight2024

Diego Bustamante, IPAF’s Latin America Regional Manager took to the stage to present IPAF’s Digital Global Safety Report in its new format. The digital report is now available with interactive and filterable reports. Diego showed a snapshot of the North America data input in IPAF’s Accident Reporting Portal last year which has influenced data for IPAF’s safety campaign, Crushing Can Kill. IPAF has been collecting data in the North America for 10 years, in the decade 670 reports of accidents have been made which helps navigate guidance, training courses and IPAF’s work across the region.
