About us
We are the national organisation responsible for developing and promoting sport and physical activity in Wales. Our role is to advise and add value. We work closely with our key partners to ensure that the delivery and development of sport at both a national and local level provides the people of Wales with every opportunity to excel at their sport of choice. We see the benefits of sport in the widest sense; not solely impacting on improving the physical health of the nation, but also in bringing communities together, building confidence in young and old, providing new skills and training and attracting investment into Wales. To unite a proud sporting nation is not only ours, but the sector’s vision, where every child is hooked on sport for life and Wales is a Nation of Champions. We aim to not only improve the level of sports participation at grassroots level but also provide our aspiring athletes with the support required to compete successfully on the world stage. This vision isn't necessarily new. We're still focused on getting more people, more active, more often, and on Wales securing enviable sporting success. But it's noticeably different - ambitious in scope, bold in its outcomes and highly challenging for all of us working in sport. We want a diverse, passionate and skilled sporting workforce that encourages, inspires and supports everyone who participates in sport. Today Sport Wales has opened a brand-new Storm Damage Fund, thanks to additional funding we have secured from the Welsh Government. The investment team at Sport Wales are constantly working at capacity managing the Be Active Wales Fund, the Energy Savings Grants, our Partner Capital Funding stream and the A Place for Sport Fund with Crowdfunder. Despite this, when we decided to respond to the challenge the sector is facing due to the past few weekends of poor weather, they immediately operationalised this fund, getting it from concept to live in a matter of days. Huge credit also to the communications team who have equally had to be incredibly reactive to an unplanned crisis. Naturally, our challenge of having to get this fund open, and secure the funding for it, is nothing compared to the challenge of those dealing with the impact of the storms. We cannot continually have these types of funds, as the funding simply won’t be there indefinitely, and the issues of climate change are only going to prove more dramatic and impactful. That wider concern needs to be factored in. Still, it is really positive that we have once again been able to provide some relief to those crucial local community clubs who give so much in terms of volunteering and creating sporting opportunities. If you know any clubs impacted by the storms, please do signpost them to this short-term application window. It opened today and will shut next Tuesday at 4pm. All details can be found here 👇🏻
