Keir Starmer made much of his promise to Esther Rantzen to allow parliament a speedy vote on assisted dying. But by approaching the issue through a private member’s bill he may find he has set back her cause. Read Dr Hannah White OBE and Jill Rutter's comment on why the row over the assisted dying legislation has exposed the shortcomings of private members' bills https://lnkd.in/eaXGxeC4 #parliament #ukgovernment #legislation #privatemembersbill

I'm pleased to have my first piece for the Institute for Government published today. The Labour government has turned to public bodies to deliver some of their biggest ambitions for the country. This tracker will follow the set up of these new bodies - of which there are currently 17 (and counting) - including details about governance and funding as they emerge. N.B. This number may seem large, but spread over the course of a parliament, it falls within the normal trend of 2-12 public bodies set up per year. This explainer was written to complement my colleague Matthew Gill's timely new report, 'How to set up a public body' (find here: https://lnkd.in/eYKyCpHS), also published today on the IfG website. It draws on lessons learned from the set up of six bodies. The primary takeaway is that clarity of purpose, good legislation and political consensus are needed early on for success.

In conversation with Cat Little, Civil Service Chief Operating Officer 📅 Monday 02 December, 15:00-16:00 The government has set out its intention to support the civil service with the necessary tools to deliver for the public. Reforms to improve the capability of the civil service are needed – particularly in a tight fiscal situation where efficient and effective government is essential. So how is the civil service planning to address these questions while supporting the government’s agenda and delivering the prime minister’s promise to build a ‘government of service’? We are delighted to host Catherine Little, Civil Service Chief Operating Officer and Cabinet Office Permanent Secretary, to discuss these questions with Dr Hannah White OBE. 🔗 Register to watch in-person or online: https://lnkd.in/d8QxKdSB
