After many years of observing, we have noted that the price of gold can take three basic directions: Gold can go up. It can go down. Or it can go sideways. (Sideways is a direction.) Gold may travel in any of the above directions for short periods or long periods of time. There are vast numbers of ostensibly brilliant people who will opine on the price direction of gold: the height or the depth of price movements and the length of each of period. Many of them are paid a great deal of money to hold and promulgate whatever their / house current opinions might be. Most usually, this is done in exchange for money or some other compensation. ("Likes" and “Followers” being amongst them.) Some of them look at numbers. Some of them draw squiggly and parallel lines on charts. And some of them read and recite what someone else has written or said. Their conclusions are presented in order to insinuate they may possess some special insight, access to information, or intuition. - We are unconvinced that they do. Their inevitable caveats always go something like this: “On the other hand… unless …. and if…”. Depending on the time period of selection, it is true that an investment in gold can be presented as inspired intelligence or pure idiocy. (This is a characteristic that gold shares with all other financial assets.) However, none of the above matters. What really matters is that any real-world trading strategy should be bidirectional, agnostic, and have known and controllable low leverage. Most crucially, it must be applied with unwavering discipline. It must be absent ego, or any unquantifiable input based on nebulous "experience". Over the past week, gold has declined by 6.35%. This recent article from Goldman Sachs is quite useful. Not necessarily in the “useful” sense of “useful” but in a broadly informative and non-investable sense. Most research focuses on one specific reason and this piece makes the case that there are a number of reasons that may account for the recent rise in gold. There’s never just one reason. There are lots of reasons. It’s not one thing: It's everything. Far be it for me to offer any advice to Goldman Sachs, it would have been just a teensy-weensy bit more helpful if they had published this article in June ’24. (XAU $2,293). Or, even better, how about Oct ’23 (XAU $1,823). Still. Never mind. Nonetheless, a price target ($3,000) and an actual target date (end of year) are so much more ballsy than the “chocolate tea-pot” type of research that we most commonly see. Will Goldman Sachs be right? If they are, they will be sure to tell us… And if they’re wrong?
