We’re building a joined up and high quality skills system in England, follow to find out more about the work we do.
About us
We are the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, known as IfATE, we work with employers to shape skills training in England, for the future of the workforce. IfATE was created in 2017 as an arm’s length body of the Department for Education (DfE). Thousands of employers help us to create and maintain over 600 occupational standards. These sit at the heart of the English skills system. By working with us, employers can shape apprenticeships, T Levels and higher technical qualifications. This helps to keep them up-to-date and valuable for learners. Here you will find out more about the work that we do, the impact it has and how you can get involved.

Great news! UCAS has announced that apprenticeships will be allocated UCAS Tariff points from next year 🥳 Our Chief Executive, Jennifer Coupland, welcomed the news: “I’m delighted that UCAS has taken this important step, as apprentices who work hard to meet rigorous industry standards should be able to progress easily to university if that's what they want. Apprenticeships are already recognised by prestigious employers and professional bodies. Getting recognition from universities completes the hat-trick. Apprenticeships are different to academic routes but they are now equally great” Read more in UCAS's press release below 👇
At UCAS, we're committed to ensuring students are aware of all the pathways available into higher education. 📢Today, we’re pleased to announce that apprenticeships will be allocated UCAS Tariff points from next year. This forms part of UCAS’ broader aim to support students take their next steps and support a diverse range of progression routes into university or college. 💭Over 200 written responses were submitted during a four-week consultation earlier this year on UCAS’ proposed model, which was developed following widespread engagement with the sector. Last week, IfATE colleagues and our digital route panel chair, Tom Morgan, were delighted to join our apprentice panel member James Stephenson at BT Group for the day. Read all about it 👇
Apprentice Panel Member @ IfATE | Apprentice Ambassador @ DfE | L6 Digital Technologies Solutions Apprentice (Network Engineering) & Early Careers Ambassador @ BT
🌟 This week has been full of incredible opportunities to present and share insights on apprenticeships at BT Group! 🎤 First up, we had the absolutely pleasure of welcoming IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) to BT Group in Manchester for a partner session. It was fantastic to showcase the amazing apprenticeships we’re running in Customer Solutions & Design (C&SD), with a spotlight on Cheri Boucher brilliant work in Keith Martin's organisation alongside the broader scope of BT Group initiatives. 🎓 We also heard an inspiring presentation from Robin Oldham at University of Staffordshire Apprenticeships. Robin highlighted the University’s pivotal role in shaping apprentices’ journeys. It was incredible to see how the course structure not only delivers a great computing degree but also reinforces holistic development beyond the apprenticeship. 💼 The next day, I had the privilege of sharing my own journey with the IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) Digital Route Panel, chaired by the brilliant Tom Morgan. During this session, I explored how apprenticeships offer flexibility to work across a range of technical fields fields, and how a robust support framework is critical for apprentices’ success. 🤝 A key takeaway, underpinned by the Route Panel discussion? Support frameworks are scalable—large organizations and small employers alike can leverage partnerships, like those with Association of Apprentices run by Emily Rock (Austin), to deliver impactful apprenticeship programs. Thank you so much to Simran Dosanjh for helping to make this a success, and to everyone involved, thank you so much for listening and making this week so incredible! Niall Powderly, Jamie Pemberton-Legg, Nikki Christie, Helen Bingham, Marianne Burrows, Margaret (Mags) Gregory, Jen Davies, Shahban Aziz, Elanor Lee, Athar M.
