If you’re missing daylight, don't worry – Winter Solstice is just around the corner. Falling on the same day across the entire Northern Hemisphere, this Saturday, 21st December marks the shortest day of 2024. At the Greenwich Observatory in London, there will be just 7 hours 49 minutes and 42 seconds of daylight 🌅 That’s a whopping 8 hours and 49 minutes shorter than the longest day in June. To our partners and colleagues in the Southern Hemisphere… we’re not at all jealous. #shortestday #time #solstice

Almost fifty-five years ago, on December 25, 1969, in Tokyo, Seiko released the world's first commercial quartz watch – sparking a technological revolution in global timekeeping ⌚️ Before that day, mechanical watches could lose or gain 5 to 30 seconds per day, equalling 30 minutes to 3 hours of inaccuracy per month. 🎯 The new Quartz Astron timekeeping devices were accurate to within ±5 seconds per month, or one minute per year–providing game-changing accuracy on the go! Quartz watches keep time using a quartz crystal, a battery, and an electronic oscillator. Batteries send electric signals to the quartz crystal, causing it to vibrate. A circuit then measures the vibrations and converts them into a single electric pulse once per second. ➡️ Shortly after its launch, Seiko released the patents for the Astron to the world, setting the global standard. Today, around 96% of all watches manufactured globally are quartz, including digital watches like the Apple watch and all Casio models. For engineers, designers, and innovation enthusiasts, the Quartz Astron represents more than a timepiece—it's a testament to how breakthrough thinking can fundamentally change an entire industry. #Innovation #Technology #HistoryOfTime Seiko Epson Corporation

“A man with one watch knows what time it is. A man with two can never be sure.” Even today, we cannot rely on one source to accurately tell the time. Instead, we use a Chain of Comparisons (CoC), a traceable chain of over 70 Stratum Reference Clocks managed by major governments. The Stratum system is part of Network Time Protocol. Stratum 0 sits at the top and refers to high-precision timekeeping devices, including atomic clocks, GPS and radio clocks. The different strata relate to the device's distance from the original Stratum 0 Reference Clock. At the bottom is Stratum 16, which refers to an unsynchronised device. We take for granted that the lights will go on when we flick a switch without appreciating the complexity behind the scenes. The same is true of time. A constant, continual Chain of Comparisons is needed to make sure we all jump on a Zoom call at the same time.

Time isn’t just money—it’s energy 💡 Traditional precision timing solutions are environmental resource hogs. Multiple devices, switches, and antennae create substantial carbon footprints. In fact, our research suggests that running this equipment can generate approximately 32kg of CO2 emissions daily. With data centres already under pressure to reduce energy consumption (currently accounting for 0.3% of global use, according to Nature), sustainable solutions are critical 🌱 Hoptroff Smart Timing offers a breakthrough: our network-timing solution can reduce associated emissions by 93%, saving 30kg of CO2 per day, per location. A small adjustment to your time infrastructure can drive significant environmental impact. Precision timing. Reduced carbon 🤝 #sustainability #networks #digitalinfrastructure
