24% of the UK population has a #disability. Official figures from 2021 showed that two-thirds of disabled people (66%) were sill unable to access bars, clubs, and cafes. Cerys Davage talks about this impact during the festive period: https://zurl.co/lKsfo #Disabilities

Like physically being within a shop, if you’re faced with a problem you’d want to speak to a member of staff. This is also the case for your online shoppers. To provide inclusive customer service on your website, it's important to provide varied contact methods. For example, a customer who is Deaf may require access to an online form or a BSL translation service. These methods should be placed in a consistent location, site wide. Let's say a screen reader user accidentally added 5 gold rings to their shopping basket, how would they know that this is the case if a shopping cart notification wasn't read aloud to them? Unfortunately, experiences like this happen far too often, due to a vast amount of online shops being inaccessible. This is something that can easily be rectified. 👩🏻🏫 This is why I push for progress over perfection ... educate, don't berate. Verbally attacking and shaming people for disability language and accessibility mistakes can make things worse. They may not bother. They may be an ally that quits because it's not worth the pain. When I catch my mistakes, I panic and my stomach hurts. I'm terrified I will be verbally blasted if I don't fix the mistake fast enough. One time I woke up in the middle of the night realizing I had forgotten alt text. No joke. I got up and fixed it. Despite being proactive and thinking about disability inclusion and accessibility daily, I still make mistakes. I share my mistakes. People told me to give myself grace. Why can't we do the same for others? Most don't know what they don't know. They need education. They don't teach disability awareness and accessibility in most schools. Granted. A few don't deserve grace because they've repeatedly ignored our feedback. But most aren't in this boat. Great read from Dave Rupert. https://lnkd.in/gpRAxW9E Dave says it's all about how you respond. Absolutely. Upsetting people doesn't help. Shaming me for a disability language or accessibility mistake doesn't help me remember. I could be tired, multitasking, or running on empty. Fortunately, I care and will fix it. The next person may not. Last year, Lainey Feingold spoke at A11yNYC and said fear is not a good motivator. She quoted WebAIM's Jared Smith on the topic. https://lnkd.in/ddKwaBeV Amen, y'all! Educate ... don't berate. Don't shame. Get the story. Ask questions. Can your users easily flow through your website, getting from point A to B with no issues? The need for a clear and consistent layout is key, with strong taxonomy to drive users on a direct path. However, have you checked that it can be accessed with assistive technology devices and software?
