  • Think, then communicate! A manager called his pregnant colleague ‘very emotional and tearful’ in an email to the company’s HR business partner. What were they thinking? He claimed to be ‘very supportive’. The employment tribunal judge disagreed. In finding for the claimant, the manager was deemed to be ‘dismissive and belittling’. The final bill for this lack of appropriate support and discriminatory action? £350,000. Getting the process wrong is costly to all concerned, extending beyond financial impact. It’s essential to get it right. Contact Emma at Heneom HR for an initial chat without obligation. Email [email protected] or call 07812 040511. Is passing wind in the workplace discriminatory? Well … when combined with inappropriate comments … yes. A council manager “passed wind” on a younger employee while he was eating his lunch, saying: ‘You have got a lot to say for yourself for a newcomer.’ An employment tribunal found that this amounted to age discrimination. It decided the manager was acting to “take the claimant down a peg or two, to show him who was boss and to curb his ambitions, because he considered the claimant a ‘babby’ or a ‘pup’.” Words are important. However, tone and context are vital in determining discriminatory behaviour. Do your policies and processes aim to stamp out discrimination in your workplace? To review your procedures or deal with disciplinaries, contact Emma at Heneom HR via [email protected] or 07812 040511. • Another increase to minimum wage levels! Today's budget confirms the third rise in three years to minimum wage. The Treasury says a big hike in the minimum wage for under-21s - the largest on record - marks the first step towards a single rate for all adults. The hourly rates for over-21s are set to go up to £12.21 from April 2025. Employees aged 18 to 20 and apprentices will also see their minimum hourly pay increase. This is fantastic news for employees. For employers, planning for the April increase should start now. How does this impact your team or recruitment plans? • Have you ever asked your colleagues what they would like to see more or less of at work? Have you asked them why they work for your business? Why they stay, why have some left? Asking your employees for feedback on their job, your organisation and how they feel about work, is all part of the Employee Value Proposition (EVP). The simplest way to start understanding your EVP is through a short, anonymous staff survey. The answers may surprise you (either way!) and are extremely valuable. Explore EVP and how it can benefit your business. Contact Emma at Heneom HR for an initial chat without obligation.
