Healthcare Improvement Scotland
Hospitals and Health Care
Supporting better quality health and social care for everyone in Scotland
About us
We believe that every person in Scotland should receive the best healthcare possible every time you come into contact with your health service. We are the national healthcare improvement organisation for Scotland and part of NHSScotland. We work with staff who provide care in hospitals, GP practices, clinics, NHS boards and with patients, carers, communities and the public. Our work drives improvements in the quality of healthcare people receive by: - supporting and empowering people to have an informed voice in managing their own care and shaping how services are designed and delivered - delivering scrutiny activity which is fair but challenging and leads to improvements for patients providing quality improvement support to healthcare providers, and - providing clinical standards, guidelines and advice based upon the best available evidence. You may not notice Healthcare Improvement Scotland in your hospital, GP practice or clinic, but we play an important role helping others put into place the improvements to patient care that matter most to you. You may have heard of key parts of our organisation that have specific roles, including: Healthcare Environment Inspectorate Helps reduce the risk of healthcare associated infection to patients by inspecting hospitals in Scotland to ensure they are safe and clean. Community Engagement Supports organisations to involve staff, patients, carers and communities in the development of health and care services. Scottish Health Technologies Group Provides advice on the clinical and cost effectiveness of healthcare technologies that are likely to have significant implications for patient care in Scotland. Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network Develops evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for NHSScotland. Scottish Medicines Consortium Accepts for use those newly-licensed medicines that clearly represent good value for money to NHSScotland.

We are currently developing a Scottish Approach to Change for health and social care. Following this approach will help achieve high quality, effective, safe and person-centred change. Our website provides the first draft and we are actively seeking feedback on how we can improve and refine it. We are looking for opinions and comments to help achieve this. Our latest Citizens Panel survey has found that people in Scotland have put local access to primary care services – including GPs, dentists and pharmacies – at the top of their list of priorities for reform of the NHS. Eighty-one per cent of respondents gave primary care as their top priority, in our 14th Citizens Panel report into NHS reform, followed by Accident and Emergency and other urgent care. More than 500 people from across the country gave responses on what they would like the NHS to focus on in this first evidence-based indication of the public’s priorities for NHS reform in Scotland. The report was commissioned by Scottish Government and the results will inform further public engagement on future plans for NHSScotland. The survey also gave NHS Scotland a clear mandate to make best use of resources and reduce waste. In a series of questions about the Scottish Government’s ‘Realistic Medicine’ strategy, panel members overwhelmingly said that they wanted to be involved in decisions about their care to make informed choices and receive care they value. It also found the public wants the NHS to use its resources to deliver what matters to people being cared for. The full report is now available to read. Link in the comments below.

We're currently in the process of developing standards for healthcare and forensic medical services for people who have experienced rape, sexual assault or child sexual abuse. These standards will update and replace the standards from 2017. As part of the process, we've launched a consultation to get stakeholder feedback. The consultation will close on 6 January 2025. If anyone would like to take part in the online survey, follow the link to our website in the comments.

Our Chief Executive, Robbie Pearson, presented an update on our work in our Annual Review. Our patient safety, dementia and hospital at home initiatives were all highlighted as supporting improvements in the health and care sector. The review also allows anyone to question us on our work. Did you submit a question that we didn’t manage to answer? Our response will be published on our website. Link in the comments below.
