As the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) opens in Baku, the Healthcare Communications Association is pleased to be launching the full version of their report Going Green: Insights on the move towards Environmental Sustainability from BioPharma Communications and Agency leaders. Environmental sustainability is one of the great challenges of our age. The United Nations defines environmental sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Through international and national agendas this has lead governments, businesses, and other organisations to seek net zero targets and to rewire their internal processes and external supply chains. In line with other sectors, healthcare companies, systems and organisations are adapting their operating practices. Within this, communications professionals have a role in enabling positive change and protecting and enhancing reputation for organisations and the healthcare industry. This dynamic environment prompted the Healthcare Communications Association Foresight Committee to gather insights from agency and biopharma communication leaders on the move towards environmental sustainability in our sector. Over recent months, interviews were conducted with industry communications leaders in Biopharma and agency. The interviews were conducted anonymously to allow views to be shared freely. The report is not a large-scale survey but gives valuable qualitative insights to inform discussion and support further progress. The interviews highlighted positive actions on environmental sustainability but a mixed picture on progress overall. All but one biopharma company had a net-zero target, yet less than half of agencies had a target and plan – although all were working on evidence and plan development. Interviewees highlighted the significant role for our profession to communicate internally and externally to deliver a more environmentally sustainable future, and some companies noted significant campaigns they are already running. HCA members can read the full report and recommendations here: https://bit.ly/3YLaeYA A feature on the findings was also published in the November edition of PharmaTimes: https://bit.ly/3O4qoqS #TogetherForBetter #PharmaTimes #GoingGreen

Congratulations to our CEO, Mike Dixon for receiving a Highly Commended for his poem ‘Mission’ in this year’s Black in White Poetry Competition. Black in White shares poems and opens minds about racism in the workplace. Started by former journalist and healthcare communicator, Charlotte Shyllon FCIM, the annual poetry competition is open to all people of colour and allies, and this year’s published anthology of the winning and highly commended poems, ‘The girl from Niue,’ is the fifth book in the series. Responding to his Highly Commended, Mike explained: ‘I am flattered and delighted that the judges considered my simple, yet heartfelt poem, Mission, as worthy of such recognition, and thank them for its inclusion. I am very privileged in my role at the HCA to be able to work with many amazing DE&I advocates and member organisations to help our sector in its own journey to ensure a welcoming and equitable career for all.’ ‘The girl from Niue’ can be purchased here: https://bit.ly/3NIgb3p
