This year, H&T Group plc celebrated their impressive 1 million-meal milestone by organising a series of events aimed at raising awareness and funds for FareShare! They hosted bake-offs, mocktail afternoons, and fun days across more than 280 stores, along with two fundraising walks covering 26.2 miles each! Additionally, H&T has matched the fundraising efforts of their colleagues, doubling not only their efforts but also the impact that their hard work will have on communities across the UK. They have also supported us by getting stuck in with volunteering at one of our regional centres in Brighton. Not only were they able to see the incredible hard work of our volunteers, they were also treated to the biggest cabbage they’d ever seen! Second-hand September is upon us encouraging us to donate, reuse, re-wear and restyle our clothes during September – and beyond! For us, this goes beyond clothes and beyond September… Our retail business is made up of 40% pre-owned jewellery and watches and so far in 2024 almost half of the items we've sold have been second-hand. By shopping second-hand, or 'pre-owned' as we call it, you can reduce waste, and reduce consumer demand for new products, which in turn protects finite natural resources. This September we're raising awareness of Second-hand September. So what is it? Second-hand September is a campaign pioneered by Oxfam to raise awareness of how shopping second-hand can positively impact the planet and extend the product lifecycle. Oxfam recently shared that producing one cotton shirt, requires enough water to fill 5,400 half-litre bottles. According to the NHS this would be enough drinking water for 1,600 people per day. A number of our senior leadership team took on the Leaden Boot Challenge last week, a challenging and demanding walking trail, all in support of our company charity FareShare UK, the UK's largest charity fighting hunger and tackling food waste. They faced the 26.2-mile trek in some challenging conditions but made it across the finish line raising over £2,500 so far, with £1 providing the equivalent of 5 meals this will help thousands in need! More challenges are scheduled, including 11 of our colleagues taking on the Thames Pathway, with all funds going to FareShare UK. H&T Group plc, today announces its interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2024. In addition, the Group announces the change of its accounting reference date to 30 September, effective September 2025. Chris Gillespie, H&T Chief Executive Officer, said: “I am pleased to report that we have continued to make positive progress in the first half of 2024. Our core pawnbroking business continues to attract increasing numbers of new and returning customers, for whom alternative sources of small-sum regulated lending are much constrained. Retail sales have also been encouraging, with margins on all product categories improving in the second quarter and expected to further improve through the remainder of 2024. This performance has been supported by growing demand for our foreign currency service and improved margins on over-the-counter gold purchase."
