🏀Sports tourism is a rapidly growing industry, encompassing everything from travelling to participate in or watch amateur, college, or school sports, to attending professional matches and tournaments. The sector is thriving. GSIQ's Tourism Insights' Eva Satkute Stewart, has compiled valuable insights from leading travel brands on this expanding market. Here’s a closer look at the consumer behaviours and motivations shaping this dynamic and valuable space.

As Sports tourism is one of the hottest trends of 2024, major travel brands are emphasising the importance of it in their future trend reports, brand metrics, and revenue performance: 🏀 eDreams ODIGEO Year in Travel Report found that #sports #tourism contributed 10% of global tourism and ranks among the fastest-growing sectors in the industry. ⚽ Booking.com’s travel predictions highlighted a surge in interest, with 23% of travellers (up from 10% in 2024) expressing enthusiasm for high-adrenaline adventures like skydiving, river canoeing, and mountain trekking in 2025. 🥎 At the 2024 Virtuoso QA Symposium in Dubai, “racketeering” was spotlighted as a key #luxury trend for 2025, reflecting the rise of racket sports like tennis, pickleball, and padel being integrated into holidays. 🏐 Skyscanner revealed that 56% of millennials (ages 25–34) are keen to explore new #destinations through activities like running or cycling, while 21% of U.S. travellers have taken fitness classes during vacations. ⚾ Hilton highlighted that sports tourism is a major revenue driver for the hotel group; from 2019 to 2024, its Sports Sales revenue tripled, with 80% attributed to youth and amateur sports. On the experiential side, Hilton Honors members redeemed a record-breaking 4.6 million points for the McLaren Ultimate package in Las Vegas in 2024, underscoring the growing demand for sports-themed travel. This trend will continue to accelerate, therefore I'd argue that brands and destinations that integrate sports tourism into their international marketing strategies are better positioned to enhance brand awareness, increase consideration, and improve conversion rates (even for high-value visitors). At GSIQ, we specialise in helping brands understand how to weave experiential tourism into their research programs to inform their marketing and brand strategies for maximum impact, ensuring they stay ahead in this rapidly evolving space.

Saudi Arabia aims to attract 100M visitors by 2030 and in the process redefine itself as a modern destination. The focus is on tourism, sports, and experiences. Whilst countries in GCC have long offered experience tourism such as city tours and desert safaris, these attractions have not driven significant visitor numbers. In contrast, #sports #tourism has. Looking ahead, I expect that destinations near the Red Sea and cultural treasures like AlUla are poised to gain more prominence and excitement from experienced travellers looking for places “off-the-beaten” path and it will be interesting to follow how community, economic, social, cultural, and environmental goals are being aligned. About that and a lot more in conversation with an industry colleague Claude Blanc and insightful comments from Sam Dawson and Oliver Rowe GSIQ #insights #travel #saudiarabia #gcc #events #experiences

Hi everyone, don't miss the STRz webinar tomorrow! Overtourism has been making headlines this year, but beneath the surface, there’s a bigger story about how travel is changing and what it means for short-term rentals (STRs) and the tourism industry. Here’s a sneak peek at what I’ll be covering in an upcoming webinar: 🔹 80 percent of travelers visit just 10 percent of the world’s tourist destinations. 🔹 The debate has evolved from "how much money tourism brings" to "who really benefits" 🔹In 2025, tourism intensity is expected to increase in destinations like the #CanaryIslands, #Balearics, #Venice, Dubrovnik, #Paris, Edinburgh, Reykjavik, #Amsterdam, and Prague. 🔹 More regulation is coming in 2025. 🔹 #Travel demand is evolving with changing travel expectations, especially for experiential travel - sports and entertainment tourism growing like never before. 🔹#Solo travel is picking up pace (link to data below) - how can STRs cater to this growing market? 🔹 Remote workers are driving uptick for medium-term lets whilst blue-collar workers —an important segment often overlooked. What do these trends mean for 2025 and beyond? Join me for an insightful webinar where we’ll explore these shifts and discuss what’s next for tourism and STRs.
