A charity championing equitable access to a healthier life & a better future for anyone with experience of homelessness.
About us
Groundswell works with people with experience of homelessness, offering opportunities to contribute to society and create solutions to homelessness. Participation is at our core because the experience of homelessness is crucial in making decisions that affect lives and ultimately help people to move out of homelessness. We aim to address four key issues: homelessness; health inequalities; lack of participation in service delivery and policy; as well as a society that does not work for everyone. We achieve this by ensuring people can access health care; offering progression opportunities for people with experience of homelessness; and by creating change in policy and practice.

One of our ListenUp! reporters, Andrea, was in The Standard today, talking all about Groundswell and her work with us, as part of the Evening Standard Partnerships & Comic Relief Winter Appeal. 'We come together to share our experiences without fear of judgement. The project gives people who don’t usually have their voices heard an opportunity to be in control of their own narrative, or to explore issues within homelessness that are neglected. Only by understanding the particular barriers people face and by challenging lazy or harmful stereotypes can we support people to lead better lives.' A huge thanks to Evening Standard and Comic Relief for their support of our work. New analysis commissioned by Pathway - Homeless and Inclusion Health from Alma Economics shows the positive return on investment of a nationwide initiative to end the shame of discharges from hospital into homelessness. Read more below 👇 #HospitalDischarge #Homelessness #Research
BREAKING ON Channel 4 NEWS – NEW RESEARCH PUBLISHED New analysis commissioned by Pathway from Alma Economics shows the positive return on investment of a nationwide initiative to end the shame of discharges from hospital into homelessness. All anyone wants after a spell in hospital is somewhere safe and warm to recover. However, the combination of unprecedented levels of pressure on our health services and the housing crisis means that people facing homelessness are being discharged to the street whilst still recovering from treatment. This has devastating consequences for people’s health and results in repeat readmissions to hospital. The solution, specialist intermediate care, offers safe, short-term housing and support for people recovering from a hospital admission. And now, new research shows that it’s as cost effective as it is beneficial for people’s health. A proposed nationwide initiative to expand specialist intermediate care for people experiencing homelessness has an estimated financial benefit of £1.20 and societal benefit of £4.30 for every £1 spent. This is equal to financial savings of approximately £5,200 per patient. We're calling on Government to commit to ending discharges to the street in the cross-Government Homelessness Strategy and 10-year NHS Plan, alongside the scaling up of the specialist intermediate care and hospital care services necessary to achieve this. You can find the full report here: bit.ly/4fnmuF2 You can also visit our website to find out more about the solutions to street discharge and how you can support our calls for change by writing to your MP: bit.ly/3ZgA5I4
