💡 Our analysis of DVLA data reveals a remarkable trend: the proportion of BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) to ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles is growing exponentially, reaching ~7% of the entire car market in 2024 Q3. However, BEV adoption rates must continue accelerating to meet the UK’s ambitious ZEV mandate. 📈 Much of the recent narrative suggests demand for EVs is flat-lining, and this may be misleading. While this conclusion may become apparent when focusing on new car sales in isolation, our data paints a more optimistic picture: BEVs as a share of total transactions—both new and used—are growing rapidly. 🤚 🤚 The rise of the second-hand EV market provides consumers with another viable option to make their BEV switch. This may explain some apparent slowing in new BEV growth as this additional market matures, rather than indicating declining demand. ⚡ A growing debate highlights the tension between industry realities and increasing government mandates culminating in a total ban on new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. 🚗 Manufacturers argue BEV demand cannot keep up with these mandated targets, forcing them to rely on EV credits from BEV-exclusive competitors such like Tesla and BYD. Moreover, numerous car manufacturers have warned of job losses without further support. For example, Stellantis has recently announced the closure of its Luton plant, affecting 1100 workers. Despite these challenges, EV sales still made up nearly 25% of new car registrations in October 2024, and our data reflects this growing adoption relative to ICE vehicles, especially post-COVID-19. 🌍 However, as shown above, focusing solely on new car sales overlooks the bigger picture. The media and manufacturers’ narrative should shift to account for the entire car market rather than just new car sales as this will give a more realistic (and positive) picture of the degree of EV adoption. ❓Going further still, should the remit of the ZEV mandate be extended to include Used Car transactions too? 💡 To find out more about automotive data and analysis, contact us at [email protected] #usedcar #BEV #ICE #electiccars #DVLA #automotivedata #automotiveanalysis #gmapanalytics

Today is GIS Day! 🌍🌎🌏 At GMAP we're all geographers and we're proud of our contribution to the world of GIS (or Geographical Information Systems for those that are less familiar)! We use GIS every day to provide data-driven insights for our clients. We love it so much we developed our own: MVPLUS by GMAP 🗺️ This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of GIS Day. At GMAP we're in our 5th decade of using GIS to produce location planning solutions to help our clients uncover the power of “where”. We've seen GIS evolve from complex systems to intuitive, user-friendly platforms (hello, MVPLUS by GMAP 💻✨), and our love for GIS has only deepened! #GISDay2024 #GISDay #GIS #LocationPlanning #LocationAnalytics #LocationIntelligence

In our previous post, Awais and Charlotte’s map provided a dynamic look at the opening of Toys R Us Shop-in-Shop locations within WHSmith stores, as part of Day 17 of Awais’ #30DayMapChallenge. This day’s theme was all about collaboration - and their map truly exemplifies the power of working together. Take a look at some snapshots from Joseph Murphy’s visit to one of the Toys R Us locations at WHSmith in Newark, where he got a first-hand look at the concept and perhaps even picked up a gift for his children! Awais and Charlotte didn’t just collaborate on the analysis; they took full advantage of our MVPLUS by GMAP software to do so. The map creation process was seamless and efficient, thanks to a variety of powerful tools and features within MVPLUS: 👉 Cloning Workspaces for Seamless Collaboration To ensure smooth collaboration, Awais and Charlotte utilized the clone workview feature in MVPLUS. This allowed them to work on the same map simultaneously, with each contributing to the overall design and sharing insights in real time. 👉 RetailVision Points for Precision and Speed Charlotte leveraged RetailVision points, our comprehensive dataset available on MVPLUS, to quickly plot the exact locations of WHSmith stores that feature Toys R Us. This automated process saved hours of manual data entry and ensured the map was based on the most up-to-date information. 👉 Drive Time Catchments for Targeted Analysis To define the areas each store serves, Awais used the drive time catchments tool in MVPLUS, setting the radius to 30 minutes. This tool automatically calculates and visualizes the catchment areas, giving a clear picture of how far customers might travel to visit each store. 👉 Proportional Symbol Maps for Demographic Insights The final touch was the use of proportional symbol mapping to display the percentage of the population aged 5 to 9 within each store’s catchment area. By visualizing these varying proportions, Awais and Charlotte pinpointed areas with the highest concentration of children in this age group—offering key insights into potential customer demographics. The result? A compelling map that shows regional variances in the 5-9 year old population across England, highlighting stores where this key demographic is most concentrated. Want to see how you can use MVPLUS to conduct similar analysis and create powerful maps? Awais, one of our talented graduate consultants at GMAP, has been actively participating in this year’s #30DayMapChallenge! For Day 17, the challenge focused on creating a collaborative map, and Awais teamed up with Charlotte to produce an insightful analysis using our MVPLUS software. Together, they explored the exciting Toys R Us Shop-In-Shop concepts popping up in WHSmith stores. By leveraging RetailVision and running efficient drive-time catchments around each Toys R Us location, Awais pinpointed the stores with the highest concentration of 5 to 9 year olds - a crucial demographic for this retail initiative. The result is a data-driven map that not only highlights the strategic placement of these new locations but also underscores Awais’ skill in turning data into actionable insights. Check out the excellent collaborative work below! #mvplusbygmap #locationanalytics #locationintelligence

Day 17 of the #30DayMapChallenge: Collaborative map For this prompt, I had worked with Charlotte Farrow to produce a map output using MVPLUS by GMAP. Recently, Toys R Us has returned to the UK market and are currently located within existing WHSmith stores across the country. The map below shows the percentage of population aged between 5 to 9 within a 30 minute drive time catchment for each Toys R Us location in England. Stores with the greatest percentage of 5 to 9 year olds in their catchments are located around London, Birmingham and in Halifax. The self-serve GIS platform we had used, MVPLUS, has a number of handy features which made this collaborative effort a lot easier. Tools such as the cloning feature enabled me to share the project with different users such as Charlotte. As well as this, the vast array of datasets available on MVPLUS (such as the RetailVision points and population counts) removed the need to do any searching online prior to creating the map. Finally, the drive time catchment calculation was super simple, using only a few clicks of a button, to capture the catchment areas covered by each store. GMAP Analytics
