Gaia attended the #NatureFinance24 conference on Tuesday for the second year running. Hats off to the Ecosystems Knowledge Network for organising another successful event and driving forward the UK’s emerging nature-based solutions. We’re pleased to be playing a primary role in advancing the #BiodiversityNetGain market. A year ago we launched the BNG Marketplace, and it's now the largest and most advanced platform in the UK, with over 28,000 Units, 650 + buyers and thousands of searches and enquiries each and every week. Thank you to everyone involved in making this event a platform for meaningful connections and impactful discussions. #NaturalCapital #NaturalAssets #GreenFinance

Did you know that Scope 3 emissions—covering everything from suppliers to logistics and product lifecycles—are often the largest portion of a company’s carbon footprint? They can account for up to 90% of total emissions in some industries, yet they are among the hardest to measure and reduce. 🫣 Our latest blog is packed with actionable strategies like fostering supplier partnerships, optimising logistics, or leveraging comprehensive tools such as Gaia’s Carbon Accounting Software to drive measurable & meaningful reductions. A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of East Anglia explores public opinion on #BiodiversityNetGain, based on a representative sample of 500 adults from England. The study sheds interesting insights into public perception of #BNG: 👉 𝟮𝟭% of respondents said they had experience with BNG (with 𝟰𝟴.𝟲% of those having encountered it through local projects, 𝟮𝟲.𝟳% through non-local projects, and 𝟮𝟱.𝟳% through work-related experiences). 👉 𝟱𝟴.𝟮% of respondents believed it was possible to create a net gain in biodiversity after a development loss, with 𝟯𝟬.𝟴% unsure and 𝟵.𝟴% disagreeing. 👉 𝟲𝟯.𝟴% of respondents had a positive opinion of BNG overall, while only 𝟲.𝟰% held a negative view. 👉 𝟴𝟰% of respondents agreed that developers should be responsible for the creation and management of compensatory habitats. 👉 𝟲𝟴.𝟱% of respondents felt the BNG metric was an effective tool for measuring biodiversity, though 𝟭𝟳.𝟯% disagreed. The study notes limitations such as a potential overestimation of BNG knowledge, however the findings underscore the importance of transparency and effective communication in the successful implementation of BNG policies. 🔗 Full report: https://lnkd.in/eTd3iYab

Gaia reposted this
Biodiversity net gain #BNG update: 📝 Biodiversity gain site register news The 20th site has appeared on the biodiversity gain site register, today I think (despite its registration beginning 021024), and it is significant for two reasons. First, it is the first secured via a conservation covenant rather than a s106 agreement. It is between the Environment Bank and RSK Biocensus, for a site at Yate Fold Farm north of Bolton and in that local authority and what looks to be the Southern Pennines NCA. The register entry can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dzUtxkgE I don't see the conservation covenant published anywhere, RSK Wilding do you publish these? Secondly, it is the first site to include watercourse units - 500m of ditches being improved from poor to moderate condition. Come and get yer luverly watercourse units! The other 19 entries are all either area units only or area and hedgerow units. At a recent BNG event hosted by Searchland, Ben Askins from Gaia reported that demand for watercourse units significantly outstripped supply compared with the other two types of units, so this is welcome news. Meanwhile, as the Freedom of Information response deadline passes, 85% of local authorities have now replied to me about planning applications subject to mandatory BNG, with nearly half of those saying how many they have received. I will post a fuller report next week but the percentage has been slowly rising and is now 6.7% of all planning applications.
