🔁 The potential merger of #CSRD, #CSDDD, and #EUTaxonomy: What it means for reporting 🔁 A few weeks ago, the #EU announced plans to merge three key #ESG disclosure regulations — Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), and EU Taxonomy — to reduce bureaucracy and reporting burdens. In our latest article Flag's associate head of reporting and sustainability advisory, Georgina Shiplee, sets out everything we know about the announcement so far and what it could mean for your business. Here's a quick rundown: 👩🏫 Understanding the regulations: We break down the CSRD, CSDDD, and EU Taxonomy — core components of the EU Green Deal promoting sustainable business practices. ⏭️ The proposed omnibus: The EU wants to consolidate these regulations into a single 'omnibus' law to reduce reporting overlaps and bureaucracy. 💼 What businesses need to know: While the core principles are expected to remain, there's concern about the potential for regulations to be revised or watered down. With the deadline for CSRD and CSDDD compliance rapidly approaching, and with companies already investing significant time and resources to prepare, the possibility of further changes and lack of detail on the full content and timeline is increasing uncertainty. 🌥️ The silver lining: Despite uncertainties, the focus on advancing ESG reporting continues. The proposed changes could lead to more streamlined processes, allowing businesses to allocate more time and resources to making a real impact — a win for all. Need help assessing your readiness, identifying gaps and the steps needed to comply with upcoming ESG reporting regulation? 🌿 COP16 Biodiversity: The good, the bad, and the ugly 🌿 The 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (#COP16) in Cali, Colombia, was a pivotal event for global biodiversity efforts. Flag analyst, Matt Thomas, shares his round-up of the key takeaways. The good ✅ Wider engagement: Attendance doubled from COP15, highlighting growing global awareness. ✅ Indigenous rights: A new permanent body was established to give Indigenous communities a voice in future biodiversity COPs. ✅ Corporate and financial sector involvement: The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (#TNFD) saw a 57% increase in participation since early 2024, with major financial institutions managing $17.7 trillion in assets now on board. The bad and the ugly 🚫 Lagging protection goals: Only 17% of land and 8% of marine areas are currently protected, falling short of the '30x30' goal – to protect 30% of the world’s land and water by 2030. 🚫 Funding shortfalls: Developed nations promised $20 billion annually but only delivered $15.4 billion in 2022 - with an annual biodiversity funding gap of around $700 billion still remaining. Looking forward 🔄 Unified action needed: Governments, financial institutions, and businesses must align on biodiversity integration and a unified plan to mobilise resources. 🌐 Interlinked crises: The biodiversity and climate crises are interconnected, requiring a unified approach. The challenges are significant, but so are the opportunities for meaningful collaboration and progress. A couple of weeks ago, our incredible US team came together to spend a few awesome days in New York 🗽 It was such a lovely opportunity to connect in-person, share ideas and recognise the amazing work this team has been doing. And we had a lot of laughs along the way – including a hilarious but not quite successful escape room attempt. We're excited for the next get together already!

Shaping the future of ESG disclosures 📊 A couple of weeks ago, Flag's CEO, Victoria Taylor, led an insightful panel discussion at the ICRS Exchange, where experts gathered to unpick the rapidly evolving landscape of ESG disclosures. The panel delved into the implications of new regulations like the EU #CSRD and #CSDDD and how they are reshaping the future of corporate transparency. Key takeaways from the session: 🔹 Compliance challenges: With the EU's ramped up reporting regulation comes stringent sanctions for non-compliance as well as variability of enforcement across member states. 🔹 Governance and stakeholder engagement: With ESG reporting moving from voluntary to mandatory, businesses must set up dedicated teams to oversee compliance, data management, and stakeholder communication. 🔹 Cross-functional collaboration: Knowledge sharing, close collaboration and alignment across teams are essential to meet the growing demands of ESG disclosure regulation. 🔹 International standardisation: With overlapping regulations emerging across regions, experts are calling for more international standardisation. How are these regulations shaping your approach to reporting? #ICRSExchange #ESG #Sustainability #Reporting ICRS | The Institute of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability
