🎄Christmas is just around the corner! Whilst for some that means a big family gathering, for co-parents the holidays may present a whole host of logistical and emotional challenges as they consider who goes where and for how long… Co-parenting can be challenging at any time, but particularly around the holidays with all the added expectations, pressures, and additional plans – how best to navigate this? There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach – it will depend on your relationship with your child’s other parent. Collaboration and openness are productive starting points, as is establishing clear boundaries and sticking to agreements. 👉 Read more in our FREE factsheet, ‘co-parenting across households’: https://lnkd.in/dzeN_4Vb 👉 Access all of our Fatherhood Factsheets covering a range of topics here: https://lnkd.in/euVcfjCE 👉 Our Family Foundations parenting programme focuses on preparing and supporting the couple relationship and co-parenting quality. Building a better deal for Britain's fathers
About us
The Fatherhood Institute works to build a society that values, prepares, and supports men as involved fathers and caregivers. Our work focuses on policy, research, and practice. We collate, participate in, and publicise research; lobby for legal and policy changes; and help public services, employers, and others become more father-inclusive. Our partners and clients include government, NHS and local authorities, family service providers and organisations, universities, NGOs, employers – as well as fathers. Our vision is of a society that: 1. Gives all children a strong and positive relationship with their father and any father-figures; 2. Supports both mothers and fathers as earners and carers; 3. Prepares boys and girls for a future shared role in caring for children

🗣️ “When both my daughters were born I remember going to endless appointments with my wife, which were all about her and the baby – because obviously that was the important thing. But I did always feel like a bit of a passenger in that process. Occasionally they’d say ‘are you ok’ and in that circumstance I didn’t feel like I could say anything but ‘yeah I’m fine’ – so that I didn’t come across like I was having a whinge. It’s like ‘poor dad…not lugging around an unborn baby inside my body, but struggling with it’. I didn’t think that was going to go down well with anyone in the room.” A participant at our first Dads Panel meeting last month shares his experience of the failure of the perinatal health system in the UK to include and welcome fathers. We want dads to be offered their own health check – a safe space where they receive a check-up, advice about what to expect when the baby arrives, and reassurance that if they’re struggling, there’s somewhere to turn for help. Fathers' health matters to their partners and children, as well as to men themselves. Let's start to take it seriously. 👉 Learn more about our #lookingoutfordad campaign: https://lnkd.in/eazUg_46 ❗️Since the Government confirmed they will launch a consultation to inform the forthcoming Men's Health Strategy, it's more crucial than ever that fatherhood is included. Sign our open letter today: https://lnkd.in/es_EEmwv 👉 Are you a father with ideas about how we could improve our work, strategy, and advocacy, with a little time to spare? Fathers are less likely than mothers to engage with schools – but many would consider getting more involved if given the opportunity, according to a nationally representative survey of +5,000 parents from across the UK commissioned by Parentkind and administered by YouGov. 67% of fathers were involved in at least one school engagement activity in the last six months (most common activity was attending parent-teacher meetings), compared to 82% of mothers. ❓ What stops fathers getting more involved, and could schools do more to help? 👉 Read more in this blog: https://lnkd.in/eWyQxYsX ❓ Why does school engagement matter? We know that parental engagement in activities to support their children’s learning, such as reading and play, are important for a child’s educational and behavioural development – and fathers’ early involvement specifically has been shown to have a direct impact on their children’s later attainment at school. We were co-investigators alongside Dr Helen Norman of University of Leeds Business School on the 'Paternal Involvement and its Impact on Children's Education study', funded by ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council. The PIECE study strengthened the evidence base about the impact of fathers’ involvement in early childcare on their children’s attainment at school. 👉 Access the PIECE resources: https://lnkd.in/eguCCcfw 👉 Learn more about our other work under our 'fathers & education' work stream: https://lnkd.in/evTnaKJD #fatherinclusivepractice #education #schoolengagement #fatherimpact #parentalinvolvement #parentengagement

Our series, ‘6 weeks for dads: meet the experts’, is part of our ongoing campaign for improved paternity and reserved parental leave for fathers. Each month, we’ll be sharing a video interview with a researcher exploring the evidence underpinning our campaign. Our December edition is with Dr Pascal Vrtička, Associate Professor in psychology at the University of Essex Centre for Brain Science. Dr Vrticka talks about what happens to men's brains when they become hands-on fathers, and the kinds of support they might need. 👉 Watch the video interview here: https://lnkd.in/eTi3EVGe 👉 Learn more about our #6weeksfordads campaign here: https://lnkd.in/emp7ZG3e 🌟 Help us to continue driving this campaign forward by becoming an FI supporter today: https://lnkd.in/epbMA69c #paternityleave #parentalleave #timewithdad #fatherhood #uk #menshealth

A new study by Public Health Wales and Bangor University reveals how adverse childhood experiences are passed down through the generations. The research found that, of the almost 300 fathers in prison that the study investigated: 🚓 One in three lived with someone who had been to prison when they were children themselves 🚓 Almost half had four or more Adverse Childhood Experiences 🚓 Their children were 2x as likely to be exposed to domestic violence and over 7x more likely to live in a household where mental illness was present With the Government estimating that around 200,000 children each year have a parent in prison, there is a clear need to reduce the intergenerational harms to children - for example through prison-based programmes on parenting and good relationships. 👉 Read more on the Prison Advice and Care Trust (Pact) website here: https://lnkd.in/eP3HYpfc 👉 Learn about the work we do under our 'fathers & safeguarding' policy work stream here: https://lnkd.in/eYeGZnYZ 👉 Learn more about our training courses for health, education, and family services here: https://lnkd.in/ebmWZ-7n #adversechildhoodexperiences #domesticviolence #intergenerationalharms #prisonpopulation #parentingsupport #criminaljusticesystem
