  • 🚨 Fraud Alert: A Life Lesson from Partner Gordon Buist 🚨 Recently, Partner Gordon W Buist had a close call with fraud, and it’s a timely reminder to always stay vigilant. He received a text from MBNA about suspicious activity on a card, asking for transaction confirmation. Following what seemed to be a legitimate process, Gordon received a ‘professional’ call from a lady named Becky. She confirmed his details and begun guiding him through securing his account. However, when Becky started mentioning inaccurate transactions, Gordon soon realised she was a scammer attempting to steal card details. Key Takeaways 📒 : ·        Fraudsters are getting more convincing. The scam was polished and mirrored real processes, making it harder to detect. ·        Even knowing your name, card number, and post code doesn’t guarantee the person on the other end is legitimate. It could indicate your details have been compromised. ·        Always contact your bank directly if you’re unsure. Trust your instincts. This experience serves as a timely reminder to stay alert and never take shortcuts when securing your personal information. A big thank you to Gordon for sharing this experience to help others avoid similar situations. 👏 However, this is one of many ways that fraudsters can target individuals and businesses. From phishing emails and fake websites to fraudulent HMRC letters, fraudsters use a range of tactics to exploit trust and gain access to sensitive information for financial gain. For more tips on recognising fraudulent HMRC letters, take a look at our article: https://lnkd.in/eK2rUPS7 #OneEQ #FraudAwareness

🚨 Fraud Alert: A Lesson from My Recent Experience 🚨 I recently received a text from MBNA about suspicious activity on my card. It asked me to reply “Y” if I’d tried to pay £270 to Amazon or “N” if I hadn’t. Having seen similar texts before, I replied “N” without much thought. When I was at University, I worked as a customer service agent for HBOS, and I regularly had to assist clients with suspected fraudulent transactions, so I know the approach the bank would legitimaly follow. Shortly after I replied "N", I received a call from an English lady named Becky, calling from a London number. She sounded professional and advised me not to disclose my full card number or personal details; she correctly told me the last four digits on my card and my post code - this is exactly what we were trained to do at HBOS. Becky explained that my account was recently registered on an Android device but she could see that I log into the MBNA app from an iPhone, which is true. After again reciting the last four digits of my card and post code, she started guiding me on “securing my account” and blocking the supposed Android device. Things started to feel off when Becky suggested verifying recent transactions - she mentioned seeing that I’d used my card in Fife recently (she had my post code, so I might have thought nothing of that). But here’s the catch — I hadn’t used my MBNA card in almost a year, and it was still safely tucked away in my wallet. Then came the kicker: Becky said I’d receive a text to reset my security details. Something in my gut told me to stop and call the number on the back of my card instead. That decision saved me. When I called MBNA, they confirmed that there had been no attempted transactions on my card for over six months. They also suspected Becky was a scammer attempting a phishing attack, likely with my card details and post code obtained from a data breach - she knew my name and my card number and never once asked me to provide my details. MBNA immediately cancelled my card and locked my account. My Takeaways for Everyone: 🔒 Fraudsters are getting smarter. Becky’s approach was polished, convincing, and mirrored the many conversations I had when I worked for HBOS. 📲 They can send texts that appear to come from your bank. Don’t rely on the SMS thread’s appearance for legitimacy. 📋 Knowing the last four digits of your card, your name, and post code doesn’t mean they’re legit. It could mean your details have been compromised. 📞 If you receive a suspicious message or call, don’t engage. Always contact your bank directly using the number on the back of your card. Stay vigilant. Even the most cautious among us can get caught up in scams that are becoming harder to detect. Please share this to help others avoid falling victim. 💳✨
