As a designer, my work relies on businesses investing in their futures. Yet, I see both government and big companies fixated on short-term fixes over long-term innovation. Northern Rail still uses fax machines, highlighting the urgent need to modernise. But alongside fixing today’s issues, we must fund future-focused initiatives like EV charging networks and healthier food systems—investments that will pay dividends in years to come. In business, short-termism stifles progress. Activist investors prioritise quick returns, sidelining sustainability and innovation. R&D teams brim with potential, but bureaucracy and fear of change hold them back. History warns us—think Kodak or Boeing—that failure to adapt is a path to decline. Yes, progress has its risks. But innovation is how we improve, and without it, we risk staying stagnant. Now is the time to balance today’s fixes with tomorrow’s vision. As part of our celebration of 20 years of inspiring design we are shining a spotlight on some of our work from the archives. In 2021 Echo refreshed Zwitsal, Netherlands’ most trusted babycare brand, to reassure parents of the brand’s trusted mildness and to celebrate the real, honest moments of parenthood through its “joyfully soft” design and iconic Kleintje brand icon. We’re proud to partner with English Tea Shop to introduce House of Remedies – a new range of food supplements inspired by ancient Hela and Ayurvedic practices. Leveraging their expertise in organic production, we developed a brand strategy, ‘Ancient Blends Revisited’, that connects age-old wisdom with the wellness needs of today’s consumers. From brand positioning to packaging, our goal was to reflect the holistic, plant-based essence of the products. The brand icon draws on the Ayurvedic concept of the 3 doshas, representing sustainability, organic cultivation, and holistic health. It’s been a pleasure bringing this project to life with a clean, modern design system that balances the power of nature and science. #HouseOfRemedies #DesignStrategy #Branding #Ayurveda #Sustainability #OrganicLiving #CreativeCollaboration

As part of our celebration of 20 years of inspiring design we are shining a spotlight on some of our work from the archives. A quintessential challenger brand, the redesigned giffgaff identity disrupted the norm, allowing them to punch above their weight to get heard. The design reflected a range of personalities, flexibly deployed across digital, print and TV idents, keeping the brand lively, surprising and appealing to a younger audience. Want the full story?
