  • 🌟 Our Team’s Top Moments of 2024 🌟 As we approach the end of the year, the EMU team are reflecting on our highlights of the past 12 months. First up, our fantastic People and Place lead Josie Moon: ‘My first moment of true delight was the community panto back in January.  What a glorious process it was working with everyone and producing such a lovely show - especially given the fact we had to move the venue hours before the show.  It was great fun and full of heart. (Image 1) My next moment of delight was to welcome our families to Opera North's production of Cinderella in February.  Not only was it a lovely musical experience it was such a pleasure to see our community loving something that would not normally access. The children in their costumes made me smile so much and it was one of those days when I was overflowing with satisfaction at what EMU does in the community. (Image 2 & 3) I also really enjoyed the Autumn Festival and all the talent that was on show over those three evenings.  I am immensely proud of everyone we work with and the high quality of events we produce with our partners. The warmth, fun and sense of sharing that always seems to happen at our events is just wonderful.’ (Image 4) We'll be sharing more of the team's top moments throughout the week! 🌞

  • A belated Autumn Festival celebration! Back in October, we hosted a 3-day Autumn Fest on Freeman Street Market, showcasing a variety of excellent regional creativity. The festival kicked off with our Young Musicians Night, followed by a vibrant theatre takeover from our friends at lowercase, and ended with The Happening; our incredible annual community food raiser. Music, performance, laughter, togetherness. Thank you to our community, performers, and partners for a very special weekend. 🌞 Photos by 1-4 by Emma G. Photos 5-7 by Through My Eyes Photography

I’m pleased to share this series of case studies developed for the Co-operative Councils' Innovation Network (CCIN) as part of their new Councils’ Co-operative Development Toolkit, which aims to help councils grow the number of co-operatives in their local area. The brief was to capture the diversity of co-ops across the UK and highlight their economic and social impact to inform and inspire a local authority audience. I know there are many more amazing examples, but I think we have made a good start! The case study deck also includes instructions for 'building your own case study', additional materials to support this are due to be added to the toolkit section in the near future. The toolkit was 'pre-launched' at the Co-operative Party Conference with a presentation from Jim McMahon as Minister for Local Government and Honorary Vice Chair of CCIN and Cllr Jim Robbins the new Chair of CCIN and launched in full at the Local Government Association Conference on Wednesday 23rd October. A big thank you to all interview participants and the CCIN’s project lead, Jonathan Nunn, for your time, energy, and patience!! This project would not have been possible without the support of Power to Change, Kirklees Council, York St. John University, and, of course, the Co-operative Councils' Innovation Network (CCIN). The co-operatives included are:  Cooperative Network Infrastructure Outlandish Co-operative Dulas Ltd South Manchester Credit Union Equal Care Co-op Belfast Cleaning Society Suma Wholefoods Arla Foods East Marsh United Delta-T Devices Câr-Y-Môr Unicorn Grocery The Fox & Goose (Hebden Bridge) Limited Lilac Housing Co-op GlenWyvis Distillery Newfield Medical Group (GP Practice) Lambeth GP Food Co-op Sharenergy The full toolkit can be found here: https://lnkd.in/e5iT4ibx #coops #cooperatives #workercoops #casestudy #research #academia #impact #democracy #economy

NEW REPORT | Constructing Consensus: The case for community-powered development and regeneration “The perception that development is “done to” communities rather than “with” communities gives oxygen to local NIMBY narratives that development is foisted upon them with no opportunity to shape or influence the nature of it.” In a report out today, we make the case for a better system of development in England – one that fully involves and empowers communities in decision-making. We argue that the government’s ambitious housebuilding targets will be at risk unless the planning system gives communities more power and influence to shape local development. Key findings: 🏠 Local communities can be pro-housing development when they are more meaningfully involved in decisions and have a stake in the outcome. 📈 Involving communities in regeneration schemes can increase their quality and sustainability. 📍 Where local authorities have the power and resources to place shape and ensure developers prioritise community needs, better housing delivery follows. In it we set out a vision for a renewed approach to regeneration and development which builds in the role, voice and influence of communities. To achieve this, we offer practical recommendations for policymakers and planners. Illustrated by dozens of national and international examples, including: ✅ Communities taking on ambitious regeneration projects in Plymouth, Hastings and Grimsby – with positive economic and societal impact. ✅ Councils like Test Valley fully involving local people in planning and securing buy-in and better development as a result. ✅ And international case studies of Dublin, Vienna and Zurich that demonstrate the wider potential of better housing policy. • The point of 6 Feet of Your Street is that it is a 'standing with' not 'doing to' project.' We need to learn from our experience and develop our projects effectively. There are enormous street level challenges ever present in this work. 6 Feet will be back, with more feet, more hands and more understanding of what to means to take positive action collectively, enfolding residents in the commitment to a reimagined, better neighbourhood.

EMU regrets to announce that the Six Feet of Your Street event scheduled for September 28th is postponed until next year. 1. The team at EMU has not had the capacity over the summer to undertake pre-engagement work on Harold Street with the community. 2. Recent work has highlighted to us that we are in danger of 'doing to' the community with this project and it needs a rethink in order to fully engage the community and involve residents in a much more meaningful way. (The KTP and East Marsh Community Plan work are addressing this.) 3. There would be significant cost to EMU to pay to close 1 block of 1 street - almost £2,000 for the closure, ESAG and TEN licence. EMU does not feel that this is an appropriate or affordable cost. 4. EMU is delivering a range of other events throughout September (including the postponed SEND Festival). We have to look after our staff and ensure we can fulfil all of our obligations and commitments. Thanks for your understanding.
