Predictably and justifiably, Collins Dictionary has declared 'brat' to be the word of 2024. Popularised by Charli XCX's all-conquering album of the same name, 'brat' has been everywhere this year, from megabrands' social posts to Kamala Harris's election campaign. But what's been marketing's equivalent of 'brat'? What's the buzzword every agency has been casually dropping into their decks, pitches and LinkedIn posts this year? Here are a few contenders: 'GenAI' If you need this explaining, it may be time for you to retire. 'Personalisation at scale' Not quite as snappy as 'brat', granted – but this was an equally exciting concept for tech-minded marketers. Using AI and big data to customise messaging, brands can now get personal with *everyone*. 'Rizz' Young-person slang for charisma, rizz was what every Gen-Z-targeting brand aimed for in 2024. The Drum even produced a guide on the subject, entitled "How to make your brand 'rizz' without being laughed at". 'Equity-centred design' Basically: designing with everyone in mind. This approach puts marginalised communities front and centre, making marketing more inclusive and fair. And better experiences for customers = bigger wins for brands.
