HR has been through a number of stages since its humble beginnings in the 1950s and 60s. For those of you who remember our early days as "personnel officers," we were the place for employees needing support, focused on employee relations and resolving issues - usually with plenty of admin. Our influence on the business was limited, and the idea of being on the exec team would have been laughable. Then came the late 90s, when we were transformed into “strategic business partners.” Almost overnight, we were expected to move from providing tea and sympathy to being key members of the senior team, influencing leaders to manage people effectively. But this shift often came without the right skills or mindset, bringing in rigid processes, one-size-fits-all systems, and a perception of HR as a mere “lackey” for leadership. Now, those first and second evolutions are drawing to a close, and we’re stepping into the Third Evolution of HR.
