The design of the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), University of Cambridge's Christmas card 2024 was etched into a silicon wafer using a laser. The IfM’s nanomanufacturing group created the starry festive scene using dark-field optical microscopy. The group focuses on the development of technologies to structure advanced materials into well-defined superstructures. 🔋 A key application they're focusing on is the development of better batteries to fight climate change and energy poverty. 💧 The processes and material architectures developed by the group also apply to sensors, photonic materials, thermal management systems and water filtration. An alumni duo behind the founding of Wordware (YC S24) – a full-stack operating system for #AI development – have secured $30 million in seed funding to transform how AI solutions are built and deployed. Robert Chandler (CTO), pictured below, left, and Filip Kozera (CEO), below, right, met nearly 10 years ago while reading deep learning at the University of Cambridge. Their company, Wordware, enables anyone to create, iterate and deploy AI agents using plain English. By introducing natural language as the new programming language for AI, Wordware empowers domain experts and engineers to collaborate seamlessly in building sophisticated AI solutions.

CARES welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Mr Heng Swee Keat to our facilities on Wednesday 4 December to share two of our projects under the large SGD$90m Decarbonisation programme announced earlier this year supported by the National Research Foundation Singapore. The projects Hydrogen and Ammonia Combustion in Singapore (HYCOMBS) and Sustainable Manufacture of Molecules and Material (SM3) will advance #research on non-fossil fuel-based pathways for Singaporean industries and aid in the country's transition away from petrochemicals. The visit consisted of a closed-door discussion and a tour of several #decarbonisation activities #CambridgeCARES will be doing to contribute to the new projects. Much of the resources that CARES invested in our facilities stemmed from the centre's flagship decarbonisation programme called C4T. By building on existing strengths, CARES will partner with new collaborators such as Tohoku University, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), EPFL, and CNRS to create impactful results with HYCOMBS and SM3. CARES would like to acknowledge our local partners at Nanyang Technological University Singapore for helping to set up the CARES facilities in 2013 and being instrumental partners in our projects over the last decade with the National University of Singapore.
