Climate Bonds recently published our new investment criteria outlining the eligible measures and transition pathways for the production of more than 40 agri commodities to align with a 1.5 degree future. The agri food system is responsible for more than 30% of global GHG emissions - the bulk of which come from production. Today I met with Vice Governor of the #Hokkaido government and the Mayor of #Sapporo to call for the acceleration of regional revitalisation through the promotion of Green Transformation (GX) on the island. That means rapid growth of renewables, of which Hokkaido has huge potential. “Energy demand in Japan is now going up. Much of this is being driven by the rapid growth of data centres using Artificial Intelligence applications. Japan could make sure these are in regional areas like Hokkaido that have clean energy resources and need economic stimulus”. The background is that by pushing ahead with renewables development in regions like Hokkaido Japan can get to 60% clean energy by 2035, creating regional jobs along the way - and boosting energy security. The country currently imports 83% of its energy; in a world of heightened geopolitical risk that's a big problem; fast growth of renewables is the answer. To put this into perspective, the United Nations Environment Programme estimates that a minimum of USD500 billion a year is needed for adaptation. Cities like Jakarta, Mumbai and Shanghai are already particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change – and the outages in the region can have a ripple effect, impacting the global economy.
