This week, our Trustees and CEO visited Downing Street to emphasize the urgent need for innovation in clinical trials and to pave a way for second-generation full-spectrum cannabinoid medicines to be licensed and made available through the NHS. Despite the 2018 change in law, current NHS pathways only accommodate first-generation isolated cannabinoid medicines. We advocate for expanding these pathways through appropriate clinical trials and creating a licensing route for second-generation full-spectrum medicines. We seek the most effective treatments for a population of children with less than a 3% chance of a new medication reducing their daily seizures once diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy. There is ample real-world and observational data demonstrating the positive outcomes of second-generation cannabinoid medications. With access currently limited to fewer than 50 children through the private sector, and with private options dwindling, parents are often forced to seek alternatives through the illicit market, which comes with significant risks. Our soon to be published peer-reviewed report highlights the prevalence of this practice in the UK, a situation that should be unthinkable. Supporting our call for change are Epilepsy Action, the Tuberous Sclerosis Association, CDKL5UK, the UK Infantile Spasms Trust, SRF UK, and the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society. Their invaluable support amplifies our message, ensuring it reaches the right people. History has shown us that much greater challenges have been overcome. By working together and reaching out to those who can effect change, we have full faith that one day this will become a reality. #savetheunicorn Hannah Deacon Matt Hughes Michael Barnes Tom Cross Alice Salisbury Dr Callie S. Great to see this update on CIC member Dalgety on the BBC. Congratulations! 🚀
🌟 A landmark moment for Dalgety! 🌟 Over the past 5 years, our team has worked tirelessly to secure all the necessary MHRA and Home Office licenses to cultivate, manufacture, and supply medical cannabis products in the UK. In the last 2 years, we’ve successfully grown and completed over 700 quality control tests across 10 batches — paving the way for our first product launch in January 2025. 🚀 For the first time ever, Dalgety granted special permission to the BBC to bring cameras into our state-of-the-art, highly secure cultivation facility. This exclusive access showcases the meticulous processes involved in producing the first-ever MHRA-approved medical cannabis flower grown and prescribed in the UK. 🌱💊 Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this groundbreaking journey in patient care. 🙌 https://lnkd.in/e7S5uKER #MedicalCannabis #MHRA #DalgetyUK #Innovation #PatientCare

There’s plenty to digest from yesterday’s Channel 4 Dispatches episode ‘Britain’s Benefits Scandal’ from a medical cannabis perspective. It was clear from the programme around the lack of a holistic approach to supporting claimants, with a disconnect between social security, employment, and healthcare policy. We know from extensive real-world evidence how medical cannabis can help those with conditions such as chronic pain and anxiety, some of the drivers behind long-term illness and un(der)employment. The Cannabis Industry Council recently published a health-economics study, alongside Drug Science, Ethypharm, Glass Pharms, and Rua Bioscience , looking at the impact of prescribing medical cannabis for chronic pain on the NHS. This research found that the NHS doing so would reduce the amount of time taken off work by 27 hours per patient, as well as increasing their individual earnings by hundreds of pounds. This equated to an overall potential benefit to the economy of £1.48 billion (plus a further £3.97 billion to the NHS).
