As part of our ongoing expert series with G7.hu (Gazdrovat Kft.), Managing Director for Cambridge Econometrics Hungary Dora Fazekas and Economist Márton Simó explore which countries might see the most impact on GDP as a result of rising global temperatures and more extreme weather events, comparing scenarios of more or less climate policy action to achieve net zero by 2050. Find out more below ⤵
Read the latest G7 article we wrote with Dora Fazekas exploring the impact of extreme temperature increases on GDP across different regions and countries of the world, and how this might differ between climate policy action and inaction to achieve net zero by 2050. In a business as usual scenario, extreme temperature increases (3.5-4 degrees Celsius) could lead to significant GDP declines, with countries such as Saudi Arabia potentially seeing an annual GDP decline of 47%. Committing to Net Zero pathways could also lead to economic downturns in countries such as Brazil, India and Japan, with Saudi Arabia facing up to a 15% decline in GDP by 2050. However, when compared to the economic risks of inaction under extreme temperatures, the benefits of taking action largely outweigh doing nothing. The article gathers recent evidence and research backing the main argument for committing to climate action.
