Bringing mental health care to young people using conversational AI to enable early psychological interventions

About us

Cam AI is a tech start up using conversational AI to build a tool to help adolescents with emerging mental health issues. Our overarching mission is to improve the mental health of millions of young people through early, real-time, psychological interventions. We are responsibly developing an authentic and transparent chatbot trained on proven therapeutic techniques. Using conversation driven development our chatbot will automatically predict and personalise what professional therapists would say in similar, highly nuanced situations in order to respond ethically and reliably to users. Cam AI is a University of Cambridge spin-out and an early stage start-up, with pre-seed funding. Our small team of accredited mental health care providers, engineers and academics have a wealth of qualified psychotherapy and machine learning knowledge and experience.

There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that social media may be harmful to young people. Addictive algorithms provide a stream of exaggerated lifestyles, unrealistic beauty ideals, harmful ideologies and other toxic content that can lead to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, anxiety and depression. In an effort to counter some of the negative effects, the Australian Senate has voted in favour of a social media ban for children under 16. This week is Anti-Bullying Week. The Anti-Bullying Alliance highlights that 40% of young people have experienced some form of bullying, whether it’s at school, work, home or online. The impact can be profound, with bullying linked to mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, self-harm and low self-esteem that can often last into adulthood. As a company dedicated to mental health, our team is building a digital tool to provide meaningful early interventions and a safe, accessible and non-judgemental space for young people to talk about mental health concerns. Cam AI’s Imogen Lester was recently invited to be a key note speaker at the Cambridge WHO Simulation hosted by Students for Global Health Cambridge in the beautiful setting of King’s College. CamWHO is a simulation of the annual World Health Assembly. Participants attend as delegates representing a country, company, NGO or the press and debate and draft resolutions. The final documents are submitted to the WHO in Geneva to demonstrate the creative capacity of the next generation of global health leaders. This year’s theme was AI in Healthcare and Imogen delivered a talk on supporting adolescent mental health through conversational AI and discussed how AI implementation can help to tackle healthcare inequalities. Many thanks to Maria Solovyeva for the invitation to take part in such an inspiring event. #universityofcambridge #ai #mentalhealth

Data from the World Health Organization's Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children study found more than 1 in 10 adolescents show signs of problematic social media behaviour, struggling to control usage and experiencing negative consequences. With problematic social media use linked to poor mental and social well-being, including depression, anxiety, bullying and isolation, it is important to encourage healthy online behaviours. Measures suggested by The WHO Regional Office for Europe to help young people safely navigate digital spaces include: 👉digital literacy education to promote responsible social media use and online safety 👉social media platform accountability with appropriate age restrictions and responsible design 👉open dialogue about digital well-being to reduce stigma and increase awareness 👉better access to confidential, non-judgmental and affordable mental health services Cam AI’s team of engineers and metal health specialists are developing an accessible digital tool to support young people struggling with mental health issues that are frequently exacerbated by harmful, yet legal, online content. By providing early real-time interventions our mission is to effectively address emerging concerns before they become chronic. Last week Cam AI team members Harry Knighton and Aarushi Kansal attended the Open Data Science Conference (ODSC) in California 🌎 There was a strong focus on large language models and LLM safety and it was a great opportunity to gain some strategic insight on AI innovation from industry leaders and connect with others in the tech community. Aarushi also delivered an engaging talk on implementing generative AI research, focusing on how to transform academic concepts into actionable, functional AI models and make them accessible to a broader audience 🙌 #ai #generativeAI #datascience

We know that poor mental health weighs heavily on individuals and their friends and families, creating psychological and emotional challenges and contributing to social isolation, relationship difficulties, educational and occupational struggles and economic and financial hardship. However, these figures also demonstrate the wider costs to society and the economy as a whole: ➡️ £109 billion in economic costs due to lost productivity from absenteeism, presenteeism, staff turnover and economic inactivity linked to mental health issues.  ➡️ £130 billion in human costs attributed to reduced quality of life. ➡️ £60 billion in healthcare and support services for people living with mental ill health. Cam AI is creating a digital tool to provide meaningful interventions at the earliest point of escalation to help to mitigate long-term mental health problems and ease the burden on an overstretched healthcare system.
