This week on Bunkerspot, Donald Trump’s election victory led many to ponder the effect his return to the White House will have on the #maritime industry, particularly regarding the #energytransition. Speaking to Bunkerspot, Allyson Browne, CEO of High Ambition Climate Collective, and Adrian Tolson, owner of US-based maritime consultancy 2050 Marine Energy and Vice Chair of IBIA, suggested it would be a tall order to reverse the progress achieved over the last four years. ‘On the international stage, we’re well underway on developing the international enforcement measures for the 2023 IMO GHG reduction strategy,’ said Browne, adding, ‘and the International Maritime Organization will continue to move ahead with the adoption of the planned basket of measures next year.’ Tolson offered a similarly sanguine response. ‘Four years of a Trump administration is not going to derail the planet’s decarbonisation efforts,’ he affirmed.
Tolson was speaking to Bunkerspot from Athens where marine fuels industry stakeholders gathered for the IBIA’s Annual Convention. Unsurprisingly, regulatory and commercial uncertainty were key discussion points in the Greek capital. Simon Bennett, Deputy Secretary General at the International Chamber of Shipping, reiterated the association’s support for a flat rate #levy-based system per tonne of fuel in order to close the gap between conventional fuels and ‘very expensive’ near #zero-emission fuels. Addressing the implementation of the EU Emissions Trading System, Bennett said that the EU has stated that in any review of the ETS it will take account of what might be agreed at IMO. However, he cautioned, as the ETS gets underway, ‘and as Member States get the money, what is the possibility that they are going to be reluctant to relinquish it.’
In other news, we spoke with IEBUM SHIN, Data Analytics Lead at Houlder Limited, who emphasised the need for a holistic approach to slow steaming; the 29 orders in October marked the strongest month for #methanol-fuelled vessels this year to date, according to the latest figures from DNV’s AFI platform; and an open dialogue with #seafarers will be essential to maintaining a robust safety culture onboard throughout the energy transition, ship owner and operator Ardmore Shipping Corporation told the ship.energy #podcast, adding that #digital #technology will play a central role in training crews as new fuels are introduced.
