In February 2023, ARB launched ‘Tomorrow’s Architects’, a public consultation on proposals for a new regulatory approach to how architects are trained and educated. The initiative focuses on reforming architectural education and training in the UK with the aim to better equip future architects with the skills required to address contemporary challenges such as sustainability, climate change, and modern construction practices. This initiative represents a key step in adapting the architecture profession to the evolving needs of society, ensuring that graduates are prepared to meet future demands while maintaining high standards of professional competency. The program is part of ARB's broader commitment to modernize architectural practice in line with new technological advancements and global trends. ARB aims to remove regulatory barriers and make their approach to quality assurance more proportionate, creating the flexibility for new routes to becoming an architect in the UK. On 24 September 2024, ARB ran a Q&A webinar on their proposals for the new Architects Code of Conduct and Practice and the six new standards it sets. The proposed updates focus on strengthening professional standards and responsibility. ARB aims to simplify the code, emphasizing six core standards: honesty and integrity, public interest, competence, professional practice, communication and collaboration, and respect. The changes reflect a growing need for architects to adapt to modern challenges, particularly in terms of building safety, public trust, and sustainability. These updates are influenced by lessons from the Grenfell Tower fire, which underscored the vital role architects play in ensuring safety throughout the construction process. As public expectations of architects have increased, the revised code stresses the importance of continual learning, environmental sustainability, and proactive participation in ensuring both safety and quality. Have You Started Recording Your CPD? On September 4th, the Grenfell Tower Inquiry released its report on the causes of the Grenfell Tower disaster, which tragically claimed 72 lives and is considered the worst fire in modern British history. During the announcement, Thouria Istephan, an architect and member of the Inquiry panel, emphasized the serious responsibility of those working in construction to prioritize safety, stating: “If you work in the construction industry and don’t feel the weight of responsibility for keeping people safe, you are in the wrong job.” She further stressed the need for a cultural shift in the industry, focusing on continuous professional development. In response to the tragedy, Parliament passed the Building Safety Act, empowering the Architects Registration Board (ARB) to implement a mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program for architects. Launched in January 2024, the CPD scheme aims to ensure that architects maintain and enhance their professional skills, offering greater assurance to the public and clients. Starting in 2025, all registered architects will be required to document their CPD as a condition of their registration! Record your CPD on MyARB online portal. https://lnkd.in/ejhBkHum If you are a RIBA member you can log your CPD on their platform instead and sign a declaration at the end of the year to confirm you have done so. Please note that ARB cannot accept documents uploaded to MyARB as evidence for your CPD, you need to complete the simple digital forms in MyARB. There are two mandatory topics this year: 1. Fire and life safety 2. Environmental sustainability. Reviewing ARB's guidance on these topics will assist. Spreading out your CPD over the course of the year will save it becoming an administrative burden at the end of the year. The ARB scheme is focused on learning outcomes and requires you to self-reflect on your CPD activities. ARB will not accept CPD certificates, attendance records or course diplomas as evidence for your CPD. Instead, you are required to show how you have developed as a professional and applied what you have learned to your practice. Refer to our CPD guidelines and topics here. https://lnkd.in/eZ39zePD
