This is what cycling does for children. Gives them hope. Good for their confidence. Good for their health. Well done Sustrans and one of our local cycling legends Lucy Dance #cyclingformentalhealth #cyclingforhealth #brightoncycling
Part two of our video showing the positive impact of a Sustrans project helping women and children fleeing domestic abuse to rebuild confidence and gain a sense of freedom. Alongside housing provider Stonewater and volunteers, bicycles, cycling and bike maintenance sessions are offered to families living in a refuge, enabling them to travel actively and reestablish independence. The project is having a huge positive impact and transforming young lives at the refuge, as this video shows. One 12-year-old boy was told by a doctor he’d never be able to ride a bike but, after just a few weeks at the refuge, he was up and cycling. He now rides his bike to school every day. Reflecting on his journey, Project Officer Lucy Dance says: “For the first few weeks he didn’t talk, but as he learnt how to ride and developed his skills, he started connecting and sharing his experiences. “As his confidence grew, he started cycling every day with other children in the refuge and sharing what he was learning with them.” #Sustrans #ActiveTravel #Cycling #Walking #Wheeling #ChildrenAndYoungPeople #SupportingYouth #WomensRefuge
