In July we held our annual vacation scheme. The scheme was held over four days at our London office. Attendees received an introduction to IP from Boult attorneys; undertook workshops and scenarios focusing on the role of an IP attorney; received guidance on building a career in the industry; and networked with their peers and members of Boult’s team, from trainees to partners. We’re pleased to have received some great feedback from attendees this year, including: “I knew of Boult as a leading player in the IP field and gaining experience from some of the best attorneys in the business was brilliant.” #2024wrapped #seasonalcountdown

Elsewhere, Tamar Morag-Sela and Michal Hackmey of Reinhold Cohn Group shed light on the nuances of protecting patent applications in Israel and Mürvet Çalık Canyurt, Burcu Levendoğlu and Merve Değirmencioğlu of Ankara Patent take a deep dive into Türkiye’s comprehensive prosecution regime. The next installment of our #seasonalcountdown takes us to the London Youth Games. In June, five volunteers from Boult (Hayley Kenny, Jordan Waters, Karolina Andrzejczak, Taylor Samuel and Oliver Rutt) attended the #LondonYouthGames hub event at Gunnersbury Sports Hub. They helped with registration, the event schedule and score keeping, helping to make the event a great success. “It was a really rewarding experience. The kids were fantastic and the spirit of competition and sportsmanship was great to see.” Oliver Rutt, Partner and Volunteer “It was a great day out and I would definitely like to participate again. It was lovely to see so many pupils being able to enjoy their favourite sports. The event was well organised and the staff even educated us in the ins-and-outs of Tag Rugby!” Taylor Samuel, Corporate Services Officer and Volunteer

This year, we concluded our partnership with Shelter and selected Alzheimer's Society’s Society as our new #charitypartner for 2024-2025. The charities are nominated by staff and decided on by a staff vote. During 2024 we have raised funds for these great causes through raffles, competitions and events. Boult colleagues have undertaken a number of team events this year in support of our charity partners including a Vitality run, Richmond Park Race, the London to Brighton bike race and many more. The staff donations raised were matched by the partnership. In addition, we’ve continued our relationship with the Soup Kitchen, sending two volunteers a month to their central London location, and through regular volunteering placements at “Launchpad” in Reading. We are also volunteering at the Holborn Community Association, participating in their #STEM and arts club for local disadvantaged children. #seasonalcountdown #2024wrapped

Computer implemented inventions are patentable at the #EPO, but can often face significant resistance, in particular in relation to #inventivestep and, with increasing frequency, sufficiency. Case law on the assessment of computer implemented inventions can give the impression that prosecution of these cases involves different considerations from other inventions. James Short, Howard Sands, Jason Pelly and Simon Binnie explain that the assessment of inventive step at the EPO for computer-implemented inventions can be more clearly understood as a normal application of the well-known problem-and-solution approach, and highlight areas to be considered to avoid insufficiency objections.
