October marks #ADHDAwarenessMonth. Britt Sarony co-lead of our Neurodiversity group, shared some advice and learnings on how to think like a neurodiverse brain during the Bloom Hackathon. While every neurodiverse brain is individual, Britt explains some common traits relevant to ideation, as Britt explains below. I identify as ADHD because it influences every aspect of my personal and professional life. ADHD (like other neurotypes) shapes my brain's information processing, communication, and emotional responses. I also describe myself as “wired differently” due to the unique connections and chemicals in my brain that lie behind these differences. My late diagnosis at 53 clarified why I enjoyed and was drawn to generating ideas and problem-solving. I was often invited to brainstorming sessions regardless of my job role in ad agencies. I saw a connection between my experiences, brainstorming principles and practices, and neurodivergent (ND) traits. This led me to develop a process combining these insights. My idea of “thinking like an ND Brain” emphasises ‘divergent thinking’, generating multiple solutions to one problem, which taps into key ADHD strengths such as creativity, connection-making, and hyperfocus. To “think like an ND brain” in ideation means stepping outside logical constraints i.e. ‘convergent thinking’. Or as I coined it: “To get into it, you need to get out of it – and explore.” Supporting ND ideas requires a nurturing environment, as criticism can stifle creativity. Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) in ADHD means that even perceived criticism is deeply felt. So here are some techniques for ‘thinking like an ND brain’, which mirror some ADHD traits: 1. Connectivity: ADHD brains show unique connectivity patterns linked to creativity, often outperforming neurotypicals in tasks requiring novel uses for objects. Use techniques that encourage free thinking and embrace randomness. 2. Hyperfocus: Contrary to the name and (mis)perceptions), ADHD individuals can focus intensely if interested/motivated. This can be harnessed in ideation with timings and techniques - using ‘global processing’ such as big picture thinking and/or ‘local processing’. However, there is a crossover in all of this as very high levels of co-occurrence between all neurotypes. #BloomUK #TogetherWeBloom

Rounding up our three words to reclaiming narratives series for this year’s #BlackHistoryMonth, Elizabeth Anyaegbuna, Co-founder and former Bloom President, shares her experience: Rewrite, Amplify, Illuminate. It's time we tell our true story. We're not reclaiming dusty volumes penned through a Western lens, but crafting a fresh narrative that resonates with our ancestors' whispers. We're amplifying those long-muffled voices into a resounding chorus and illuminating the vibrant tapestry of Black British experience that's been hidden in plain sight. This isn't about reclaiming – it's about reimagining our history with the authenticity and boldness it deserves. #TogetherWeAreBloom #BloomUK

Today (18th October) is Menopause Awareness Day. This year, the day is being used to raise awareness of Hormone Replacement therapy (HRT) and also to highlight where people can get support and discuss options. At Bloom UK, we are holding a session for members to discuss ‘looking after your mental health in relation to menstrual health’ so that people can share tips and support each other with their experiences. This is being run by Kerry Nortcliffe, therapist and founder of Full Beam/Menstrual Cycle to Work, who is one of the co-leads of MPower, along with Allie Finnegan and Kelly Jacobson Collins. #TogetherWeAreBloom #BloomUK #MenopauseAwarenessDay
