Over October and November, we've connected with Black students on campuses to discuss mental health, share resources, and create safe, supportive spaces. This important work is made possible by the incredible support from Rare Beauty's Rare Impact Fund, who have partnered with us for the second year running. YOUR continued support is vital to ensuring Black students and the wider community have access to culturally relevant mental health care. Whilst there is no specific data that highlights ethnicity within this, we know that Black and other racialised communities are more likely to experience a mental health challenge, but also the least likely to receive support. We know first hand from our work at Black Minds Matter UK just how urgently support is needed that is accessible but also culturally competent. This article highlights the increasing emergency which is the mental health crisis and the desperate need for this to be addressed. The recent Mental Health bill looks like a step in the right direction. There really is no time to waste. At BMMUK we recognise the added mental health challenges that the Black community face all year round- being more likely than average to experience a common mental health problem in any given week(NHS Digital, 2016). Christmas has unfortunately come to mean an increasingly challenging time for many when it comes to mental health. Financial stress, increased rates of loneliness and the pressure that can come with wanting to ensure things are ‘perfect' can all compound at this time of the year. We're here to remind you that it's ok to seek mental health support and to lean on those around you at this time. You do not have to suffer in silence. Visit our Support groups and Helplines Guide via our website for more information on where to seek support. It really matters.
