“Appointing Better Story to help us develop our Trust and Foundation fundraising activities was a really good call. Over the last 12 months not only have we applied to more Trusts than ever before, but I have also learned a lot about how we can vary our approach to potential funders and better target Trusts beyond just those operating in our own sector. Working closely with a dedicated point of contact – thank you Anna Marshall - made the whole process feel seamless and like we had an extra person in our team.” Nick Lingard - Trusts Fundraiser at BMS

What if you could raise over £250k in 4 months for under £8k Done ✔️ What if you could double in size to in reach £1 mill turnover Done ✔️ What if you could start and grow your major donor work, raising 5 figures in the first month for only £250? Done ✔️ What if you could invest in a fundraising and comms strategy to set you up for success? Done ✔️ What if you could constantly think of new ideas for Elf in the Shelf ❌ Not done - we’re not miracle workers!! Hope it’s been a great 2024 for you and your charity!? —— This post was inspired by some our client wins and their lovely feedback, such as: “Appointing Better Story to help us develop our Trust and Foundation fundraising activities was a really good call. Want to know what funders are really thinking? Here are seven insights from our Head of Development, Trusts and Foundations Jason Smith 👇
Over the last few weeks I’ve been sharing some of the funder insights that the team and I at Better Story have had from speaking to funders, this is all of them together! 1. (unsurprisingly) they have A LOT of applications! They often volunteer their time and spend their free time reading applications, this means that unfortunately they often spend very little time reading applications This means making key information stand out and making the content as easy to read as possible is crucial. 2. Information over Presentation Applications need to focus on providing strong information rather than perfectly presenting the information This means you don’t need to use the full word count if a message can be conveyed more concisely. 3."Dent in the Cause" Applications should focus less on convincing the funder of the “worthiness” of the charity, and more on showing the specific impact or "dent" the charity is making in that cause. 4.Avoiding Jargon Avoid using jargon and don’t assume that the reader has prior knowledge. A good test is whether your case for support can be summarised in two clear sentences. 5. Partnerships Mentioning existing partnerships with others (even if they are applying for the same funding!) is an effective way to capture the interest of potential new funders. 6. Current Funding If you have already secured some funding then mention this in the application, it shows interest and encourages the funder to “complete” the funding amount 7. Spelling isn’t really that important oh and neither is perfect grammar! What is important is the impact you want to make! £250k over 3 years for a UK based refugee charity £100k for an International NGO $300k for a faith based US non-profit I'm not sure what the Better Story team have been eating this November but they are on 🔥 The potent combo at the moment seems to be major donor coaching with either Supporter Comms or Trusts & Foundations. But the beauty of it is you can build your own support package to get what you need for as long as you need it. Experience and bespoke funder database included 💥 Check out our new services page link in the comments below for an idea of how we can help you and the costs. We're helping charities with turnovers between £60,000 and £8,000,000. Here's a pic from last Christmas. A few transfers have taken place since then but the core of the team and the tactics remain unchanged ⚽️

£600k raised, and counting. I think this must be our biggest result yet in a 8-12 week period 🤔 So happy for Better Story clients who have had positive news from funders lately 🙌🏼 Now it’s all eyes on the performance of our clients’ Christmas (UK) and end of year / thanksgiving (USA) campaigns 🙏🏼 I’m continually amazed at the generosity of funders and individuals who, despite the challenging context, continue to believe the world can be a better place … and give generously to that end. Thinking of my charity colleagues as I workout in a Houston gym before meetings ☺️ 💪🏼
