Art and Design practice has a long and rich history in Belfast and the School was established in 1849, the oldest School in Ulster University. Based in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter in Belfast we have a range of undergrad and post grad degrees and a thriving student community.

Today marks the day that the Belfast School of Art reaches its official 175-year anniversary—history records that the official opening was December 4th 1849. It started out in a small wing of the Belfast Royal Academical Institution, which is still there on College Square. In the early twentieth century it moved to the upper floor of the nearby Belfast Municipal Technical Institute. It stayed there for seventy years before moving again, this time to the present York Street site. Many of you will remember the famous Warwick building that stood here before our present building. Generations of men and women passed through each of these spaces—staff and students—teaching and learning across the incredible sweep of creative disciplines that have defined us over time, from Fine Art to Games Design, Textiles to Graphics, Illustration to Animation. It is those people and the contributions each and every one of them have made that we celebrate today. Thank you for joining us on this 175-year journey! #bsoa175 #weareuu

Another week of Belfast School of Art 175th anniversary celebrations kicked off last night with Educate Accelerate - a celebration of sustainable design education presented by the Institute of Designers in Ireland. I really enjoyed yesterday's Design Declares Ireland event at Belfast School of Art as part of Ulster University's 175th Anniversary programme, discussing designers and artists' roles in a sustainable -> regenerative future and tackling climate impact. Charlotte Barker's opening slide set the scene on how vital designers are in addressing some of these challenges - "It is estimated that over 80% of all product-related environmental impacts are determined during the design phase of a product." (European Commission I EU Science Hub) There was lots of food for thought - including discussions around how education - through thoughtful use of materials, processes and bespoke manifestos can be a part of this change. Oliver Jeffers' keynote was a wonderful, thought-provoking part of the evening, illustrating and storytelling about life on earth, our planet's future and zooming out to see the bigger picture. An amazing 175 night for Fashion!
On Friday, Belfast School of Art proudly presented the TADFx175 Fashion Event at Belfast Distillery Company - McConnell's Irish Whisky as part of its 175th anniverary celebrations. Produced in partnership with THE STYLE ACADEMY MODEL AGENCY LIMITED, this special event featured garments created by alumni, the present 2024 graduating class, and future graduates of the Textile Art, Design and Fashion course at Ulster.
