Belbin® - The Team Role Company
Professional Training and Coaching
Simply putting together a number of people and expecting them to work as a team is not enough. Start with Belbin.
About us
Real Teams Use Belbin. In the 1970s, nine years of research demonstrated that, although people displayed an infinite number of behaviours at work, there were only a finite number of useful behaviours that helped to facilitate team success. Nine clusters of useful behaviours were identified, and each one was termed a Belbin Team Role. How can Belbin help you? Using the language of Belbin helps people to understand which behavioural contribution is required, and when. In other words, Belbin enables managers and teams to work together and communicate openly and effectively, building trust and psychological safety and defusing conflict, even when teams are not co-located. This starts with discovering which of these clusters of useful behaviours – these Belbin Team Roles – are the most natural fit for you. It begins with you completing the Belbin Self-Perception Inventory, a questionnaire to help pinpoint your preferred styles. But this is just the first step. A wealth of research demonstrates that honest, objective feedback is crucial to effective management and leadership. And it’s also at the heart of what we do at Belbin. Each of us needs a reality check – evidence that the strengths we see in ourselves are also seen and valued by others. That’s why we ask for people who work with you and know you well to complete an Observer Assessment. Once we have all this data, we produce a Belbin Individual Report. The Belbin Individual Report offers practical guidance and advice which incorporates feedback from everyone in the team in a balanced and constructive way. Armed with this report, you can better understand your preferred Team Role behaviours and how these might shape your leadership style. We help individuals, teams and organisations to use the full range of Belbin Reports and tools to help them use the language of Belbin to make a difference to their teams. “Do you want a collection of brilliant minds or a brilliant collection of minds?" - Dr Meredith Belbin Jo Keeler and Victoria Brown will be discussing how Dr Meredith and his research team discovered the nine Team Roles, with a focus on Apollo teams, disproved hypothesis, and the original ‘big data’. They will look at the McKinsey & Company article, "Go, teams: When teams get healthier, the whole organization benefits" (published October 31, 2024) and find areas of common ground and thinking.

"Teamwork is a business matter", McKinsey says. Leaders have a stake in helping teams to work better together, because we know effective teamwork drives higher performance. The solution, according to the research? Team diagnostics that help team members understand the impact of their ‘mindsets and behaviours’ upon the group. This can be used to build towards a ‘charter’ that spells out how the team will work together. In this third and final article examining the finding's outlined in the McKinsey & Co article 'Go, teams', Victoria Brown discusses how to work towards sustainable changes that make a real difference to teams, and how Belbin, with team dynamics at its heart, can facilitate that process so well. Discover how and why in the full article below. #Belbin #BelbinTeamRoles #teamdynamics #leadership #teams

To build and cultivate great teams, team members need to understand, recognise and maximise the behavioural strengths of others, whilst managing and containing the associated weaknesses. We need to understand our own Belbin Team Role contributions, and crucially share that information with others. Through an understanding of the behavioural strengths and weaknesses present in a team, you can initiate meaningful action. It can help when forming a new team, when diagnosing why an existing team is underperforming, or when checking that each team member is able to work to their full potential in the right role for them. And more. A Belbin Team report is a great tool with which to initiate meaningful, productive conversations and to start the team on the journey of becoming as great as it can be. 👉 Read more about the 7 pages of meaningful conversation starters these reports provide in the article in the comments. #effectiveteams #BelbinTeamRoles #managers

In their recent paper, "Go, teams", McKinsey & Co identified multiple health drivers across four different areas that define how well teams work together. In this second article by Victoria Brown, we take a look at the most significant drivers highlighted in the McKinsey & Co paper, and explore how an understanding of behavioural strengths can help teams to identify any 'blind spots' and crucially, fill any gaps. #effectiveteams #teamwork #Belbin #mckinsey #behaviour

The Belbin Team 'went early' this year. This week we had our office 'Christmas Do' and enjoyed a spectacular curry followed by mince pies. 🎄 As a 'twist' on 'Secret Santa' we had 'Bad Santa' 🎅 Each person randomly selects a number and then takes it in turn to choose a gift. Don't like what you've chosen? No problem...just swap it with someone who went before you if you prefer theirs! 🎁 Was fascinating watching the different Team Roles handle this situation. 😁 The Shaper cutting to the chase and swapping without apology. The Teamworker really wanting to swap with someone but then not doing so to avoid upsetting anyone. The Monitor Evaluator having to analyse the situation to come to a decision much more quickly than they they are used to doing. All good fun and the main thing was that we were all still speaking to each other at the end! #teambuilding #teams #BelbinTeamRoles #Christmas
