About us
Behind the Scenes Virtual Assistant was set up in 2018 by myself, Emma Mulraine. Though geographically based in Inverness in The Highlands of Scotland, thanks to 21st century tech I’m able to work remotely and have built up a roster of clients across the globe. Before embarking on BTSVA I worked in the oil and gas industry where I was responsible for a payroll of £4+ million per month, paying clients both abroad and in the UK. Following this, I was employed by an accountancy firm to process over 150 monthly payrolls, as well as overseeing bookkeeping using Sage 50 Accounts and QuickBooks Online. Professionally, I have over 17 years of experience working within a variety of different sectors, with a primary expertise in finance and payroll. Through a combination of hard work, constant personal development and copious amounts of coffee, in less than two years BTSVA surpassed my three year turnover goal. Financial security is fantastic, but perhaps more importantly on a personal level, I now have pride in myself as a happy and confident mother of two (four including the dogs), who is successfully realising her goals as a young female entrepreneur. In late 2020, with the business continuing to grow, I’ve welcomed Kay Graham on board as a part-time Business Coordinator. With the positive impact of this fresh skillset, plus an extra set of hands, team BTSVA can now offer a wider range of services. Why go it alone? Establishing BTSVA allowed me to have the freedom and time to spend with my young family without having to put my career or personal objectives on pause. MTD - What is it, and why do we need to leave the paper records behind? Making Tax Digital (MTD) has been introduced, albeit slowly, by HMRC to help individuals and businesses get their tax right. It means many people are leaving their spreadsheets or paper records behind and moving over to a new digital system that focuses on accuracy via the use of supportive finance software. But what's wrong with the old paper based accounting? Well, paper records and VAT submissions are full of errors! – a poll by YouGov found that 61% of businesses admitted to losing receipts and making mistakes during the manual process of inputting and calculating data. Mistakes such as this can be costly! While MTD only currently impacts VAT registered businesses, HMRC plans to continue the rollout across the board.
