Multi award-winning museum telling the story of people in North East England in the 1820s, early 1900s, 1940s and 1950s.
About us
Beamish is a world famous open air museum telling the story of the people of North East England during the 1820s, early 1900s, 1940s and 1950s. Beamish isn't a traditional museum - you won't find objects displayed in glass cases and there are no labels. At Beamish buildings collected from across the region are filled with objects illustrating the region's history, many donated by local people to help the Museum tell their story. Costumed staff and volunteers use these collections to create a living, working Museum that tells the story of everyday life in the North East of England through time. Our focus is on people and creating an authentic, immersive experience of the region's past - an experience that constantly changes with each season.

We’ll be carrying out essential maintenance and renewal work on our Tramway at the start of 2025. 🚎 The work on our tramcars and infrastructure, which is vital for the long-term running of The Tramway, will take place from January to March. During this time our trams won’t be able to run due to the level of work taking place, and we’ll have a full bus service in operation for visitors throughout this period. The work includes rail welding, sleeper renewal, overhead line maintenance, tramcar overhauls, and lineside vegetation management—all vital for the safety and long-term preservation of The Tramway. Our dedicated Tramway maintenance team are already working hard behind the scenes on this extensive programme to ensure everything is ready for a full reopening by Easter. Thank you for your patience and support as we carry out these improvements. We’re committed to preserving and enhancing The Tramway for generations to come. Find out more about this work in our Transport Blog: https://lnkd.in/e-YmtXMS

We’ve been monitoring the forecast closely and our Christmas Evening tonight (Friday, 6th December) is due to go ahead as planned. It’s with a very heavy heart that, due to the forecasted Storm Darragh and the weather warnings for high winds and rain, we will not be able to open the museum tomorrow (Saturday, 7th December). We’re saddened to have to make this decision but the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers must always come first and with the weather warnings in place for tomorrow, it just wouldn’t be possible to open. For anyone with a Grotto booking for tomorrow (7th December), we’ll be sending you an email with further information. If you’re planning to visit us on Sunday (8th December), based on the forecast we plan to open as usual but please check our social media and website and we’ll keep everyone updated. We’re sorry we’re unable to open tomorrow due to the weather, thank you everyone for your understanding.
